Set aside how badly recorded the vocal is in the first place -- after all, that may be part of the point.

But the very first thing he does is misapply a gate that chops off the beginning of a couple of key words. Doesn't he hear it?

But that's nothing compared to the damage he does with the compressor. Hear the way the envelope crunches up? Gosh.

That's as far as I got. I wrote him off at the gate, mind you. But I kind of wanted to see where he was going. I did cut ahead to the final bit -- I didn't even skim what he wrote in between. The lugubrious echo and verb doesn't seem to help much.

I'm sorry to be so blunt but when someone sets themselves up as an authority, they're just going to have to be prepared for some blunt evaluations of their efforts, I'm afraid. :(

On a positive note, it appears to be a sincere effort to share his knowledge and, judging from the messages posted at the bottom of the blog article, it looks like many folks feel like they're getting something from it.

That said, I just hate to see people think that this is well done. 'Cause it ain't -- not to my way of thinking, anyhow.

(In fact, notoriously slapdash and sloppy as I am, I think I would reject this vocal in one of my own less-than-slick projects precisely because of the clumsy gating and the aggravation of the existing distortion/dynamic imperfection by poorly applied compression. And when I'm rejecting a take... there's gotta be a real problem. ;) )
