I purchased a Digi002/PT LE 7.4.2 from Phil, and a friend/co-worker of mine gave me a G5 tower. I installed Leopard and a bunch of stuff, the VST-to-RTAS wrapper, and this weekend, installed Waves V6/iLok (my first iLok), auditioning a bunch of plugins, and moving items, HDs, cables, etc. and stuff around in my studio for greater convenience and ease of use.

When I connected everything and fired it up and heard that delicious sound coming through my lovely ADAM monitors, I literally whooped with joy! You all know the smile across your face when you tear apart everything, get something new, and then fire it up...it just sounds sooooo good to hear that everything is working.

Excited, I began to mix right away. I absolutely LOVE these new plugins that I augmented the system with. Massey Tape Head. I recommend this to anyone. Tape saturation. It has this certain "glue". Amazing on just about everything, I used it on a mix, putting it on snare, overheads, and even the Master Buss. Damn.

Stillwell Vibe EQ. Wow. Just a couple of quick turns of the "knobs" and my vocal sounded really good. Very useful, and a very nice sounding EQ.

The Massey L2007 Limiter is simply amazing. Boosting the sound without adversely affecting the audio. Hell yeah!!!!

These new things all made my mixes much better. I am so freakin' happy with this new system. And except for not being able to find the Regions List at first (thanks, Lee Knight!), I've been hopping around on the new Pro Tools easily so far. I still have a lot to figure out since I'm like Austin Powers in the DAW world and have been jettisoned nine years into the future!!! :D Great fun!!

So I wanted to thank everyone here at SSS who helped or gave suggestions or cheered me on with this. And in particular, I wanted to thank my friend Ronny for the G5 and Phil for selling me his Digi002 and helping me with the installation!!!! Thanks to you guys, I have leapt nine years into the future, and the future sounds pretty darn good!!!

Yeah Ken! And the Massey Limiter is great on bass too. BTW, I recommend the Massey Comp as well. I like to hit a bass guitar with the Limiter... then follow with the Comp with a slow attack. Wow. Total in the pocket level control with a nice attack via the compressor. Anyway, happy to hear you're happy.

If not for this forum I'd not be as informed as to what needs to be done for a decent mix and master.

yeah i got inexpensive old equiptment but KNOWING what NOT to do is worth twice all that goode stuff you cool cats got.

maybe one day I might have some really quality goodes but until then i have a lot of ground to cover and my olde stuff is fine for that.

thanks for lettin me share.

Hey, thanks for the tip. I just downloaded the free Audio Units version (I use DP). While I don't think I would ever put it on a whole mix (at least not for my music), I might put it on an individual instrument here and there. Jack the drive up to 10 and it has some really nice distortion.

What kind of music do you play?

The Tape Head sort of "glues" everything together, so you could possibly use it on a drum buss. I had this really tappy snare that stuck out like a sore thumb no matter what I did (EQ, volume adjustments, reverb to sink it back in the mix, etc.) and the Tape Head cured it in two seconds flat!

And it sounds really good on individual guitar and bass tracks.

I think it's gonna become my new not-so-secret weapon!

I've put it on a whole mix, but I had to turn the thing down completely to use it...and I think it's better to mix with the thing on the Master Buss, but turned all the way down so you can hear what's going on. I just can't believe how well it works.

congrats Ken, happy to hear you pressed play and got a clean crispy juicy sound, that's one of life's finer things!

Yeah, definitely. Now I'm gonna do the radio show tomorrow, and I'm really looking forward to it because of all these cool little elements and the new interface (I have a controller now, the first one I've ever had). Like I keep saying, the VST-RTAS Wrapper opens up this whole new universe that I never could access before.

Mostly trance. I stuck it on the last mix I finished, and at low drive levels it just made things sort of fuzzy. The compression wasn't too bad, but I didn't like the drop in high end on the whole mix. My music doesn't have a ton of high end to begin with. Especially not the mix I tried it on.

However, I turned the drive up to 10 and liked the distortion. So I can see using it that way on a single instrument.

I just got the latest Tape Op yesterday, and Massey is featured / interviewed in this issue. They asked him what versions of PT he supports, and he was commenting that no one really uses anything earlier than PT 6.2, and I thought about you Ken. I don't know how he knew, but now I can't send him an email and say... "well, I know this guy who still uses PT 5.1..." :D

Actually, I'm intending on updating to 8.x in about a year, partially because there are some included plugins in that bundle that I would love to have.

I'm really not all that great with computers still, although I'm waaaaay better than before and can figure things out. But for the longest time that I had 5.1, I didn't update because I was terrified that I would eff things up, and also because I had a lot of plugins that were unusable in PT 6.4, which I eventually got when I made the machine a dual-boot machine. Consequently, I rarely used PT6.4 because I didn't have most of the wonderful plugins that I was using in 5.1. I only used PT 6.4 for Drumagog, and then would record it and then switch back to 5.1/OS9.2.2.

I'm just glad that I have a lot more flexibility now.
