Members Jotown
I am working tonight. My original gig canceled due to low ticket sales and I thought I was going to have my first NYE off in 23 years. But I landed a gig at local bar and I will be doing what I always do. It has been tough here in Michigan this last couple of months. I had 3 automotive oriented corporate gigs cancel in December. That has never happened to me before. Gus Lozada
This is the second year in a row where my main gig is to play... the role of son and father. I am celebrating this night with mom and my son. And nephews. It is a good gig

My daughters will call me at midnight as they have since they could talk, and we will celebrate the new year tomorrow. And that will be a great gig too. Gus Lozada
Hell yeah, don't misunderstand me. I wish I had a music gig tonight!... or tomorrow But last year and this one, I have suspended all music to be with the family. Still, I went last night to a local pub and as usual, I ended up singing with the in-site band Break a leg and have a great gig. ... A question... are NYE's gigs paid any better than a regular gig? Here, hell yeah! Three or four times what you get regularily I played at this NYEs party many years ago which lasted 9 hours . 5 of them paid at the usually higher NYE's rate... and another 4 hours at an extra-extra-extra rate

Members dparr
I'm playing one at a chinese restaurant only a mile from my house. The gig goes from 5:30 to about 9:00. I had to turn another one down. I hate doing that.
Members rasputin1963
There was a time, for many a year, that this was my best-paid gig of the year. Basically, I could name almost any price.... and get it. I'm not gigging these days.

But I know several band who haven't had NYE off in years who aren't working tonight. I am glad to have a gig. Happy New Years to all of my fellow forumites. Members Jeff da Weasel
I have this year off. My shows of New Years, scattered over the last 20+ years I've been gigging, have been really hit and miss. Some have been great, some sucked beyond belief. I am really happy to be kicking back at home for the festivities this year.
Members rasputin1963
The worst NYE gig I can recall? Some Einstein booked me to play cocktail piano, in coat-and-tails, for the Daly City chapter of the Hell's Angels. Just picture it.
Members dgarman
No, no gig for me, but that's no surprise, because I never have gigs. I hope to start playing out this coming spring though, so maybe next year.
Members ggm1960
My last working band split up in October. Although I've been practicing with a couple start-ups I haven't done an actual gig since August. I've had the opportunity to sign into a couple working bands but have passed. I sometimes almost start to miss it a little until I think about all this crap I'd have to haul somewhere. Tonight I think we'll go down to the Piano Lounge for something called dueling pianos. I hope this will be something better than the tired old local guitar bands.

Members cooterbrown
I just got back from my gig. Won't know how much I made until Friday...the owner and staff likes to get out of there ASAP, and we go and tear down and get paid on Friday...it was sold out, as usual, and my guess would be that we ought to make at least $2000. Other than 1988 and 1989 (when I didn't have a regular band), I have played *every single* New Year's Eve, since 1985. I almost didn't have a gig in 1995, but I wound up playing solo at my Aunt's house for about seventy friends and relatives (she has a big house and backyard). They passed the hat and I wound up with a little over $200.
Moderators Lee Knight Posted January 1, 2009 Moderators Share Posted January 1, 2009 I haven't gigged in years. Nicely though, I still get calls to play out and New Years was no exception. It's nice to be asked, and it's wonderful to say, "No thanks." I sat by the fire with the Mrs. and watched What Ever Happed to Baby Jane and Mongol on big screen Blu Ray. I made and ate Thai food, Pad Thai and Tom Kha with Tiger Prawns. The child off skiing with friends. That was my gig. One of the better ones I've had ever.
