The New Economy

Remember back when they used to say in the future...

Service based workforce, return to bartering and exchange of goods, and private charity, obviously more communal type stuff...

Well, Wikipedia managed to raise the whole years expenses in a couple of months. ($6mil) And this is a great example of a service being provided and the creator being rewarded on a non-compulsory basis.

The same thing comes up in our discussions about artists making a living, of course.

So, I think what we are seeing in today's economy is the actual shift taking place that has been forecasted. The service based economy is here right now.

Starting today the new economy is here. Thank God I have a good few skills I can capitalize on. Because it's already hit the point where people in my area are fighting for minimum wage jobs.

If your job can outsourced, or exported...you better start preparing now. The shift is here and for all the doom and gloom, you are actually on the cusp of a massive change and therein lies a whole new world of opportunity.

We just gotta find out what it is. ;)

Any thoughts on the subject would be greatly appreciated. And what is gonna be the next "bubble", so we can get in and out before it crashes? ;)

I didn't think this out very well, since I just hashed this out with my dude yesterday and haven't completely coalesced a viewpoint and solution paradigm. ;)

Help me out here!

A "solution" would imply that there is a problem.

It's all summed up the following phrases:

This too shall pass

The only constant in change

Fear not, Grasshopper.

I have obsessive compulsive mental masturbation disorder. I was told this by one of my Mom's freinds, who is like a seer type yoga instructor who excels at reading people. She talked to me for about ten minutes and said I was engaging in "mental masturbation" and the best thing I could do is to stop thinking so much.

It stuck with me all these years, because I know she was right. I was a bit younger and not as wise.

Lack of employment for the masses still has that ring of "problem", ya know?

There's a lot of that going around - - at almost any traffic light you see people talking to themselves (you can tell it's not a cell phone because they stop talking when they see you watching). There are a huge number of people who are incapable of having a thought, any thought, without saying it aloud.

Personally they tend to drive me away. The only thing worse than a compulsive talker is someone who can't control their urge to violence.

Intellectually it is somewhat interesting though.

There are some things that help quell the on-rush of uncontrolled thoughts (the talking is a symptom, the lack of control of their own thoughts is the cause). One that helped me was a talking book by Alan Watts. Try looking here:

Re: the OT post: I believe that barter is the key to avoid government involvement and intrusion into our lives, which is why it is technically illegal in most places in the US. Not because it is bad, but because it deprives the government of sales and income tax, and provides a convenient way for government to keep track of who is doing what with how much and when they are doing it. All of which (IMHO) are absolutely none of their business.

I wouldn't call having your expenses covered as being 'rewarded'. That's more like giving you just enough to keep you working for my benefit for very little. Being rewarded is a whole different thing.

They are a non-profit org. Plus, they keep raising much more. Well beyond expenses.

Wow, thanks for your comments, Philbo. And I completely agree with the last part of your post. That's the closest we can get to an actual free market.

Would you please stop skirting the issue and just Stranger what he should do with his life???

Stranger (and all other parties wondering what to do with their life) should stop asking other people what to do with their life, and go out and live life.

The person who will do best is the "hired gun" who can accomplish very specific tasks both deftly and cost-effectively. Think "Session Musician" but applied to society as a whole.

The most important skill will be to know how to lead effectively OR follow effectively, depending on the circumstances. But the hired gun will have to be able to do both, sometimes within the same project.

The efficiency level at which the hired gun operates will determine how profitable the job is.

The way I see it? The world is become increasingly nationalized and is being forced to be "green".

Unfortunately, this is not an overnight process. It's a slow, creaking and painful one, and the Old Order must first bite the dust.

That the EU came up with the the Euro is the smartest thing some nations have done in a long time.

Me? I buy things online in Euros quite often with a credit card, though I am in Texas.

It's just a matter of time before we---as a species---- get tired of all the Tower of Babel confusion and bull{censored}, and just resort to a single world currency. That day will be a very sane one for all mankind.

As a teacher of mine used to say: "I am deeply nostalgic for the future."

Without naming any nationalities or ethnicities, I will say THIS: When groups of people decide to fight and squabble and war for years and decades and centuries without any kind of truce or resolution... it's not because they hate war. My theory? Au contraire, they LOVE it! On some level, there has to be an immediate pleasurable payoff. Freud said it. Men love war, or else they just wouldn't {censored}ing DO it. Some countries just dig violence. I was in the Army, and I've seen first-hand that some guys (and girls) just get a big turn-on from war and violence. They LIVE for that {censored}. Let's call a spade a spade. What bull{censored} it is to see Dr. Billy Graham come on TV before each American declaration of war and say in his pious, sanctimonious voice, "We are so-o-o sorry to have to resort to the sword... we do it reluctantly... Our young men and women may lose their lives....." Yadda-yadda-yadda. Oh, please. People dig war, or they wouldn't do it.
