Members UstadKhanAli
Remaking of The Three Stooges Nyuk-nyuk-nyuk. MGM and the Farrelly brothers are finally slapping together their high-profile cast for "The Three Stooges," a comedy project the filmmakers have been developing for years. Sean Penn is set to play Larry, and Jim Carrey is in negotiations to play Curly. Benicio del Toro is a rumored possibility for the brothers' taciturn leader, Moe. The studio is looking to start production in the fall for a 2010 release slot. The project was originally set up at Columbia, which produced the 1930s Stooges shorts. C3 Entertainment Inc., which holds the licensing rights to the Stooges brand, then sold the feature rights to Warner Bros. in 2001 for the Farrellys to write and produce the movie. Eventually, Warner Bros. let the rights lapse and MGM's Mary Parent scooped them up along with the Farrellys' continuing participation. Peter and Bobby Farrelly wrote the script, which Bobby has referenced as "Dumb, Dumber & Dumbest," and will produce with Bradley Thomas and Charlie Wessler. Earl and Robert Benjamin of C3 will executive produce. The film is not a biopic but a fictional treatment that maintains the Stooges' gleeful slap schtick updated for a modern milieu. Originally constructed as four separate shorts, the feature screenplay has since been streamlined into a single narrative. Included in the story line is an opening that shows the Stooges as kids in an orphanage, a device that will require some "Benjamin Button"-style visual trickery to place the adult actors' heads on child actors' bodies. The Stooges maintain remarkably global brand recognition, and their shorts, films and cartoons are still broadcast in 30 countries. The Farrelly brothers' latest comedy "The Heartbreak Kid" grossed $124 million worldwide. Penn is repped by CAA, Carrey by CAA and the Miller Co. Members Super 8
My kids and I are big Stooges fans. Isn't this the equivalent of four musicians getting together to do a new album as The Beatles? What gives actors the balls to think they could even attempt something like this? Phil O'Keefe
Carey as Curly and Penn as Larry - I can kind of see that... but Benicio del Toro as Moe? I just don't think that's a good "fit". Not that he's not an excellent actor... it's the comedic aspect that I don't know if he can pull off. As far as them remaking a "Stooges" thing, I have mixed feelings. No one is going to top the original Three Stooges... but OTOH, remakes have a long history in Hollywood.

Members BlueStrat
I don't know...the three stooges isn't exactly Macbeth. On the other hand Sean Penn and Jim Carrey just have to pretty much be themselves.
Members UstadKhanAli
It's not MacBeth, but they are such strongly iconic characters, ones that are so vividly connected with specific personalities, that it just seems completely wrong to do it. Members cooterbrown
I wouldn't doubt Jim Carey's ability to pull it off.Remember how he simply owned the essence of Andy Kauffman in Man On the Moon?

Members deanmass
Seems like an abomination to me.. Why does everything need to get remade? Why can't people make their OWN ideas into film..? The movie I heard of this week I am looking forward to is Where the Wild Things Are. THAT looks awesome..

Moderators Lee Knight Posted March 27, 2009 Moderators Share Posted March 27, 2009 It will most likely come and go, having about as much impact on the Stooges legacy as the Hollywood of remakes of Starsky and Hutch or The Beverly Hillbillies had on those reps. A quick DVD cash-in that would most likely either bore us to tears or piss us off. It's not for you and me. No thank you. The closest they've come to a suitable tribute/remake is the recent Get Smart.

Members UstadKhanAli
That was a joke, right? You are kidding, right? No? Seriously? Yeah, that looked beyond awful. But there you go...remaking something with another iconic, strongly character-driven person.
Moderators Lee Knight Posted March 27, 2009 Moderators Share Posted March 27, 2009 That was a joke, right? You are kidding, right? No? Seriously? Well... I'll tell you... there was a scene in that movie, 1 scene, that totally captured the Maxwell Smart vibe. The airline bathroom mini crossbow sequence. The movie wasn't great, but nailed Max in that scene. Just sayin'.

The airline bathroom mini crossbow sequence. The movie wasn't great, but nailed Max in that scene. Just sayin'. That movie was not terrible, really. But I guess for many it is hard to forgive anyone to remake a classic, specially when a person's real identity was so related to the TV character, precisely like Maxwell Smart, the Stooges, etc. But indeed, many other movies from classics have been terrible ! ... Starsky & Hutch, Dukes of Hazard, Ghost Rider, anyone? ... on the other hand, they say I'm being hired to play Poncherello in the upcoming CHiPs movie... :poke:

Members Super 8
The movie wasn't great, but nailed Max in that scene. Just sayin'. Yeah, but what's the point? Don Adams nailed his own scenes. Why not just get it from the source? The best these guys are going to do is look somewhat like Moe Larry and Curly, and borrow a bunch of their gags and situations. Who needs that? There are probably over one hundred Stooges shorts between Curly and Shemp. If you're really that desperate for more you can go for the Joe Besser era. This movie won't have the feel. It'll probably set in present day, be all politically correct, and in hi-def color. I can't stand the thought of it. Jim Carey needs stick to impersonating Jerry Lewis. I have a very low tolerance for that guy.
Members D Charles
Well, can't imagine how this movie is gonna work, but someone mentioned Beverly Hillbillies and I loved that remake. From one of the first scenes where they drove into town and sorted the one finger up in the air was a clever greeting and answered in kind. Was total Mad Magazine style humor and the casting was perfect me thinks, all the way down to the real 'Jed' showing up. Now I think you need someone who's gone like Belushi or Chris Farly for Curly, and can't imagine why someone of the caliber of Shawn Penn would sign on in the first place unless the scrip kicked ass, I mean, he ain't hurting for dosh... I mean a good movie is a good movie and a suck one is a suck one and it will all depend on the 'angle' and the 'treatment.' We'll just have to see, but again, unless there's just a shortage of good scripts floating around Hollywood... Think Mr. Penn is wasted in something like this, but if he believed enough in the script to sign on, perhaps there's something there???
