Seems he's going to start doing ads for The Scooter Store.
;)

Whether its true or not, in my opinion, their last really good record was Pump from 1988? 1989? I remember seeing them in the early 90s @ MSG, Tyler had more energy than I ever had and all the crazy forward and backward somersaults. The band rocked.

With next year being their 40th anniversary in staying together and continuing to rock; that would be sad for them not to stretch it out another season.

Perhaps the injury he sustained after falling off stage at 60 is causing him to want to slow down some and the band may be pushing him a bit too hard :idk::idk::idk:

From the articles that I've read on the subject, there seems to be a LOT of speculation. I'm adding my own :blah::D:blah:

I saw Aerosmith in '75. They were opening for ZZ Top in a typical '70's arena setting. The had completed Toys in the Attic but it hadn't hit yet. We were there to see ZZ Top who did not disappoint.

All I knew of Aerosmith was Dream On and some songs off Get Your Wings. At the time, I was on a "who cares" basis with them. They came out, Tyler spinning around in a circle as he went from one side of the stage to the other spinning the whole way like a whirling dervish. Scarves were twirling and his jumpsuit was sparkling and hair was everywhere and he hadn't sung a note. He make his way to center stage and screams "How are you mother{censored}ing San Diego!!!!!"

And none of it was a cliche. It just had the audience floored. Then he sang. And traded hard bumps with Perry almost knocking each other over. They were very physical and just freakin' rocked like I'd never seen before.

It was the first time I heard the songs Walk This Way, Toy In the Attic and... with the lights down and a solo overhead spotlight lighting Perry from directly above as he worked the spooky intro to Sweet Emotion. WTF!!!! The harmonies were spot on. The drums kiiled... they made a lot noise then stopped on a dime in silence, as part of the on going groove of a tune. They literally overcame the horrible acoustics through the use of space in their groove and arrangements

Arena Rock at it's very best. They were absolutely {censored}ing great.

I saw them a few years later and they were walking dead. But that one night? Holy Crap. Tyler could've quit that night and remained a rock legend in my mind.

Maybe Tyler hit his head in addition to his shoulder.

FWIW, Joe Perry has a solo album out (released in October) and a tour, which he figured would keep him busy until Tyler was healthy. Maybe there's some conflict about that plan :idk:

I wouldn't really care much, except for the fact that Joe has threatened to continue Aerosmith with a new singer.

I mean, can you even imagine?

Of any band who was defined by their frontman, Aerosmith has to be near the top of the heap. If Steve is done, then the band needs to hang it up too. Maybe Joe can resuscitate the Joe Perry Project instead... but don't call it Aerosmith. Ridiculous.

Already has. See above. :blah:

Somebody on another forum who has met the band said it seemed to him that Perry was the brains of the operation, and Perry seemed a few tacos short of a combo plate.:poke:

The REAL Aerosmith died in 1979. Although I did like the Rock in a Hard Place album, nothing can touch 1970's Aerosmith. Certainly not the commercial fluff that they have released since 1984. Tyler however, is a superb frontman, and a total class act. Can not be replaced.

I was surprised to find out Aerosmith was still together (or could pull back together as the case may have been) in the mid-80s when Run DMC brought them back from obscurity.

Full disclosure: I saw them circa 1977 in a show at the LA Forum where the average age was about 14. It was fun but kinda weird, for sure. I enjoyed their music from the first stage of their career. It was already way retro, of course, but I thought there was actually some decent songwriting and enthusiasm from the band. I liked liking them because all my hipster friends thought they were so lame. Of course, that was then.

(Looking above, I realize my thoughts above are hardly novel in this thread. And here, I thought I was gonna get jumped again. :D )

Or their first album. Really good album.

It was indeed a good album! But as you know, they hadn't really defined their sound yet at that point. It was pretty much a harder edged Stones vibe, bluesy and good. To me, though, it was that period of '74-'76 in which Aerosmith joined the pantheon of the gods of rock. They didn't have to ever do anything again.

Unfortunately (for me), they did, and (most) people loved it, and they made a ton of money. But for the pure rock, it's mid-70s Aerosmith all the way.

For sure!!! :thu: Granted, there is some great musicianship between all of the other members in the band, but without Tyler, they would blend in with all of the other rock bands of that era and still today.

There are only a few other bands that I can think of off of the top of my head that have frontmen of the same caliper; The Rolling Stones with Mick Jagger, Guns and Roses with Axel Rose, Queen with Freddy Mercury, and perhaps Bad Company with Paul Rodgers.

Although Queen and Bad Company were both great bands, Queen with Paul Rodgers as the frontman can not compare to the chemistry they had when Freddy Mercury was front and center. On the same note, Bad Company "without" Paul Rodgers fell off of the radar pretty much.

Yeah, I have to agree with that. Aerosmith was this amazing blues boogie band, not so much a band that played Diane Warren hits.

Exactally. They rocked their balls off back then. But how can they live with playing crap like "Rag Doll" etc......when they could be blowing out "Lord of the Thighs" or "Nobodys Fault" ???

I have heard that members of the band (Whitford) were never happy with how commercial they became.

Anybody like "Done With Mirrors"? That album actually had its moments. If they were a little more focused at that time, it would have been the last great Aerosmith Record.

I couldn't agree more. I just happen to really love it. It has so much personality, the sound of a band hungry and firing on all cylinders and going for it. The later ones that you mention cemented them as rock gods, obviously, and they're the ones that everyone thinks of as vintage Aerosmith, but for me, I include the first one in there as well.

It'd be hard to pick a favorite, but I can name several that are killer tunes.

"Dream On" is the song that drew my attention to Aerosmith initially; I could relate to the lyrics. They kept my interest with "Same Ole Song and Dance" although I didn't buy the album to hear some of the other cuts that I would have liked.

Then they completely blew me away with their vibe whenever "Sweet Emotion" and "Walk this Way" hit the airwaves back to back. Not so much being able to relate to the lyrics at that time, but the music was just so energetic and they were the bad boys that the parents of teen-aged girls warned their daughters about. The bad boys that good girls could only watch from a distance without daddy standing by with a shotgun. ;)

They kept the energy going on through "Last Child" and "Back in the Saddle" and "Nobody's Fault". I don't really recall their album "Draw the Line" ever getting much airplay in the K.C. so I missed that one entirely (From what I've listened to on YouTube, I didn't miss much.)

Whenever they started hitting the shelves with repeats and remakes of old stuff just packaged in every other way, I lost interest for quite a while. I didn't really realize how much rehash they put out until reading through their discography. I can see why Billster said what he did earlier.

"Dude" was a fun tune and then they came back with a home run hit when they released "Love on an Elevator" May have only been a few new cuts tied back in with old history here and there, but they were big hits. It kept them on the radar.

After that, their songs got more mushy as the writer's began experiencing heartfelt emotions and started writing about love or pain rather than more casual encounters. Thing is, many of us could still relate, although in a different vibe, as we matured right along beside them. I can't say that I bought any of their later materials, but someone did.

Well obviously the way to resolve the frontman issue would be to have a talent/reality television show where talented singers can compete against each other and be judged by celebrities on their performances.

Judges could include such luminaries as:

Adam West

New York

Regina

and

Paul Lynde

Winner gets on the new Aerosmith album.

Can you imagine the scandals that would take place back stage between contestants that could be caught on camera? BRILLIANT!!!
