Where do you get your news?

I've been a big fan of news.google.com for most of this decade (hell, it was in beta, at least officially, for most of the decade).

But yesterday Google apparently decided to make one of their famously precipitous service changes and completely redid the page presentation -- which makes the service far less friendly and quick for many -- based on the immediate storm of protests from wounded fomer Google News fans:

Looks like a lot of former Google News regulars are now moving to Bing News... it's not perfect but it has a similar two column layout to the old Google News.

www.bing.com/news

[EDIT/Update: I've been using Bing since yesterday afternoon and it's mostly pretty usable, has a similar layout to the old Google News -- which I find far preferable to the new, scroll-crazy, space-wasting GN layout. But one stupid feature on Bing -- if you mouse over a video thumbnail -- the vid starts playing with full volume audio [depending on your settings, ie, it's not dimmed at all] -- whether you wanted it or not. Really irritating if you're listening to music or otherwise engaged. Let me click to play, Bing!)

NY Times online.

And when one of your conservative friends counters with, "What--that liberal rag?" you can respond (as I do) by saying, "While the NY Times does indeed lean left-of-center in its editorial pages, as a newspaper, its reportage is nonpareil. If you disagree, name a better one." That usually does the trick.

I stopped treating the NYT as a trusted source when they cooked so much of their news coverage to support the planned Iraq invasion. I lost nearly all respect for them. Their coverage of the middle east remains unconscionably slanted, favoring a certain nation and its policies.

EDIT: It is still a great paper in many ways, don't get me wrong. I also went through a strong reaction to similar new-cooking from the Washington Post. Still, it's nothing like the propaganda-fest you'll get from outfits like Fox News on the right and MSNBC on the left.

Wow, I just checked this. Looks pretty bad. Interestingly, it does not seem to be affecting all countries. I check Google News daily and by default my page is not the US. I only saw the new design after selecting USA.

All online -

NYTimes

Seattle Times

Houston Chronicle

Austin American-Statesman

and NPR for audio.

News, taken by itself, is not all that informative. If I'm really wanting to delve into the details of recent history, I go to other sources than news. "News" by its very nature is not a very good window on the world.

Hmmm... maybe I'll become a news expat.

Actually, in one sense, I already have. I just bumped Google News out of its place on my Chrome favorite links toolbar -- with Bing News. (Mind you, that's not an endorsement of Chrome -- it's one fast but seriously RAM-sucking bundle of code with a lot of missing features -- and not nearly as stable as its fanboiz claim. Still, Firefox drives me crazy and I won't even load IE8 unless it's absolutely necessary.)

I'll listen to it.... is it ultra-right shouting and namecalling?

Or ultra-left sarcasm?
;)

Old left sincere... and perennially outraged.

But then, a lot of stuff remains perennially outrageous.

FWIW, I was once a supporter because I admire the old school determination of the Pacifica Foundation and think it's important for people to be exposed to multiple points of view -- but while there's no dearth of rich old crazy SOB's dumping money on right wing publications, the voices of the left continue to have to struggle to be heard.

However... I, while I still respect many aspects of them and what they do, I've seldom listened since the days after the '92 LA Riots... because I got tired of the obsessive use of the word "uprising" on the station to discuss them. I saw the young, well dressed college age kids who started the fires in my mid-urban neighborhood, where 7 or 8 stores and a state motor vehicle department building were burned to the ground and a number of other business torched -- and I saw their nice, clean, late model white Hondas and Nissans and their nice haircuts and fades -- and they were clearly not people from the street.

Google News and Twitter

Twitter, lately, tends to break stories faster than anywhere. If I see something suddenly trending that looks noteworthy, I start checking for it elsewhere.

I don't even have to visit Google News per Blue's info above (and yeah, the redesign is bugging me too). I keep a news widget on my iGoogle start page, tabbed in customized categories per my interests.

For radio, if I'm in a car or something, it's NPR.

I don't watch TV.

I don't watch TV.

I despise TV news, doesn't matter, left, right, or in the middle. I can't even stand Newshour, the venerable PBS show, anymore. And even way back when I did watch it, I had to turn it off when the puppet show started, the partisan bickering segment where designated advocates forcefully and forthrightly make idiots of themselves.

BTW, I developed a real soft spot for The Guardian back in the nasty days leading up to and including the Iraq invasion. When a lot of the US media (like the aforementioned NYT and WaPo) got swept up in tin horn chauvinistic posturing, the Guardian was there giving the real scoop.

One of the best I've found is Raw Story, who really does a good job of delivering the dirt before the "agendists" spin it one way or another.

Raw Story, Puppet Gov, and Global Research all provide the latest news that the corporate media would rather not cover.

And I don't follow any of the mainstream media, but I applaud Jon Stewart for highlighting some glaring hypocrisy going on with the current administration.

The same story is going on threefold, yet the (mainstream) press is curiously silent.

I still didn't get my rights back and the new boss signed off on it. I'm now paying for bombs in more places that I don't approve of bombing.

The oil companies are still playing The Price is Right with everything from the environment to complete domination of foreign policy. We've taken out loans that The Galactic Federation will still be paying for in 3026. The Feds are still as incompetent as ever and apathy and/or complete brainwashing are at an all time high.

Global Research reported that since 9/11, more soldiers have committed suicide than died in combat. The Afghan conflict is now longer than Vietnam.

We've more or less declared war on Iran by declaring sanctions. We've got an entire fleet of US and others already in place. The only Congressman to speak out was Ron Paul. He took his five minutes and highlighted the above concerns. He also noted what this actually does to our security. Obviously, he's the only guy up there who read Sun Tzu.

But, it's alright now. It's our team in charge. Don't mind me, I'm just a racist.

:p

Democracy Now is also a good source. I try to follow as many sources across the political spectrum as I can, so I get the most objective viewpoint.

The best thing anybody can do is what Blue said, get as much information as you can and then form an opinion.

And my number one source?

Facebook. Yep, I have a whole bunch of "friends" that provide a steady stream of info regarding just about everything. It's like google news, only you can shape it the way you want it. Add a friend here, delete this guy (his {censored} got old), pick up a few more new ones...look for friends with a diverse set of priorities (that like to Face-blog) and you can get an excellent news platform.

Oh yeah, I hit the poli forum like twice a year if I'm terminally bored. No offense, but it's a "feedback loop". I use to cite it as my number one source, but that stopped a while back. Too little moderation.

So, thanks for letting me slip that rant in there. ;)
