Members Anderton
Radial sent me a loaner Workhorse 500-series rack frame so I could check out their modules...I don't have any 500-series modules, so this is a new thing for me. So of course, my first thought was to tap the collective consciousness of SSS to find out if y'all are using 500-series modules, and if so, if you have any favorites that I should check out. I keep seeing the Tonelux banner ad across the top, and the TX5C compressor looks like it would be fun...also at various shows, I've seen some modules from API and Millennia Media that look interesting...hmmm... What say you?
Members Ronan Murphy
I resisted the 500 series stuff until I tried that EM-PEQ from A Designs. It's my favorite module I have tried and now I own two (I mix through them). Of course all of the API modules are classics for a good reason. I think my next 500 module purchase will be the VOG from Little Labs.
Members LRon Butterfly
I'm very familiar with the API and Tonelux stuff. Both are excellent. I'll add the Shadow Hills 500 series stuff to the wish list. The Radial Workhorse looks really nice.
CMS Author MikeRivers Posted May 30, 2011 CMS Author Share Posted May 30, 2011 They didn't send you any modules? Get a few mic preamps (see if you can score a Harrison from Great River) so you can play with the mixer in the Workhorse chassis. Ask Radial to send you one or two of their "Shuttle" modules that gives you some sort of insert/patchbay capability. It'll make a good review to describe that in terms that people who know patchbays can relate to. Ever try an AnaMod compressor?

Hey Craig, I got into the 500 series around 18 months ago... been using the Great Rivers mic pre... works exceptionally well on vocals and electric guitars. not crazy about it on acoustics... a little too bright for my tastes. Other pieces that I am considering: BAC-500 API-527 APA Leviathon Grace M501 Love the 101 so...
Members Philter
There are several companies offering kits to build your own modules. For example, Seventh Circle Audio. I haven't done this yet but I would really like to when I have the time and money.
Members Ronan Murphy
I got one of these (full disclosure I did some beta testing on the unit), my original impression was that is was really cool but not something I would use everyday and it has since become one of my favorites that gets used all the time. It gets fairly colored quickly, but I have found that its "color" almost always works great in the mix. API-527 is high on my wish list as well, and the Great River Harrison EQ. The good thing for my bank account is that I do not have any available slots, so not wanting to spend 400 bucks on a new lunch box is keeping me from spending more on modules. Members Hard Truth
I don't usually use processors when recording and I use plug-ins for mixing, so I don't expect to get into 500 modules for processing. If and when I acquire more stand-alone preamps I will seriously consider 500 modules due to the space savings.
