Members veracohr
I don't know if this is actually a favorite of mine, but I caught it on the radio yesterday and it's been stuck in my head ever since. It has such great harmony! [video=youtube;dN3GbF9Bx6E]

Moderators Lee Knight Posted June 30, 2011 Moderators Share Posted June 30, 2011 The awesomeness of the Everlys. First off, they had a country/rock & roll attitude. Some balls and push to their sound. Second, they were, in the best rock & roll tradition, simple and creative. With 'tude. Doubling, pedal tones, thirds. All within a single phrase. Like I said. Awesomeness. [video=youtube;YBvhYupmZFM]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBvhYupmZFM
Members Richard King
Here's a formerly local Minneapolis/LA based band that I used to go see live all the time. Their harmonies were always great and they had some fans, but not enough all over the place. They wrote all their own music which was nice too. Check it out and more of their stuff and let me know what you think. They were from the very early '70's. The band is Gypsy. Moderators Lee Knight Posted June 30, 2011 Moderators Share Posted June 30, 2011 Brian Wilson. The obvious examples are pulled from Pet Sounds. For good reason. But even going to Wilson's 1998 album Imagination. Listen to this to know, if you ever had any doubts, that Brain Wilson was the man. And still is. First with the track, then acapella. More awesomeness. [video=youtube;rJPCp1W7se8] [video=youtube;WEChFDeH7Ig]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEChFDeH7Ig&feature=related

More awesomeness. Agree on Brian. I saw him in 2007 at the Consumer Electronics Show. He was playing, with his band, in the Gibson Guitar tent in front of maybe 100 people. I VERY much enjoyed the music, almost all old Beach Boy stuff, and the layout. I was close enough that I could have pulled him off the stool that he was using and took a ton of pix in the process. No flash was required because lighting was so good. One of my pix has been the main picture on the Brian Wilson Wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Wilson for a couple of years. Here are a bunch that I shot, including the band and a guest you might recognize if interested: http://www.pbase.com/rking401/brian_wilson&page=all

Members Richard King
Wow. What a great way to start loving music. Nice... I had no clue we were going to catch that. It wasn't the intention and my father wasn't a rock fan at all, but, my father drove my brother and I there for the day and we spent time at the Pier and went in for the concert. I still recall enjoying it at that age. I've always loved music and really regret never having the skill to learn things properly, otherthan engineering type projects, which I love doing, but I have never done enough of over the years. Moderators Lee Knight Posted June 30, 2011 Moderators Share Posted June 30, 2011 Marvin and Tammi A totally different type of awesomeness. Two voices with distinctly different attitudes and timbres. They weren't tight in the Four Freshman sense. Or the 5th Dimension sense. They were all vibe, emotion and heart. Usually the emotion was more joy than sorrow or pain. Just a great sound together. They sounded like lovers. [video=youtube;Xz-UvQYAmbg]

Members Jeff da Weasel
Instead of giving examples, I'll give you some concepts. 1. I tend to like contrapuntal lines rather than harmonies that perfectly follow the melody. 2. I am always more impressed by the good use of a 2nd or 7th than a 3rd or a 5th. 3. The best harmonies have different kinds of voices. For those of you who, like me, tend to record your own stuff, try bringing in someone else to do harmonies. It's all fine and good that you can do them by yourself, but it's invariably better with someone else. Harmony is kind of like sex in that regard. Members Surrealistic
Strangely enough I was just listening to one of my favourite harmonies. It doesn't come in until around 2:45 but I always loved that bit where they go "niiiiiiiiiiiiiight byyyyyyy niiiiiiiight" and hey, it's a cool song all through anyway wU_Rx9fEKmA

Members Richard King
Many years ago I saw the band "Yes". They had two opening acts, one from England called Gentle Giant and another from the US. The US band started to play well before everyone was there and they were barely known by anyone, including me. I was there when they came out and they introduced themselves by saying something to the effect of "Hi, we're The Eagles from LA". Fun stuff.
