Members Anderton
That's funny My band opened for the Association in Atlantic City back in the 60s. They were really, really, really good live - excellent musicians. Brian Cole, the bassist, was the one I talked to the most...he was a super nice guy and I was really bummed when I heard he died of a heroin overdose several years later. He certainly seemed "clean" at the time. Interestingly, his son now plays with the version of the Association that's still touring, and still has several of the original members. Members blue2blue
Yeah, I remember, that was their initial marketing hook, dressing up 'straight' and having a 'generic' name. But then they honed in on that super syrupy secretary rock thing and they sort of fell off my radar. Suffice it to say, they didn't get played much on underground FM. I'd forgotten that some pop acts lip synched on the SmoBros. But I sort of remember that clip from back then. And remember thinking about the lip-synching then. It was kind of how I divided the world in 1967. Except on, you know, Dick Clark and Lloyd Thaxton where everyone lipsynched always -- at least until the 70s -- I seem to recall Talking Heads may have played live when they were on Bandstand in '78 or so -- but I remember an hilarious number c.'67 by the Seeds where Sky Saxon was completely ignoring his lip synch duties for much of the song. I loved the Smothers from the first moment I heard them in the early 60s -- I was, after all, in junior high and they were, well, they were well-tuned for that. Members mcmike100
The Association was the the first band I ever saw at a concert. To quote Craig: They were really, really, really good live - excellent musicians. Neil Diamond was the opening act, during his rocker phase. Members Geoff Grace
Thanks to the most recent posts in this thread, I finally get it! The video in the link was just a black rectangle in my Safari browser. I thought, Either the video has been pulled, something's wrong with my Flash plug-in, or d's joke was that the video had de-evolved into a black rectangle. But after reading the posts from Craig's onward, I decided to try viewing the link in my Firefox browser; and sure enough, there was a video instead of a black rectangle. Amusing, and creative. I don't miss the sixties as often as I used to, but this video made me miss the sixties. And yeah, the Smothers Brothers were great. Best, Geoff

Consider that these cats started w/ one of the most subtle songs abt "artificial mind stimulants" ever... (check the wikipedia entry on composer Tandy Almer... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tandyn_Almer ) ..& look at the lyrics, which, regardless of one's social/cultural views, are quite erudite... ...not to mention that the tune, like most of their recs, is catchy as all get out.
