Members guitarra
Hey guys. Got a question. Are your sticks supposed to get "shredded" on the taper near the tip? I know that sticks take a good amount of punishment and get banged up, but my sticks got chewed up pretty quick. Is it the way I'm playing, or maybe the way my Hi Hat is set up? Thanks Again! Members Nagi
Yes it happens, and it all depends on the manufacture and wood type (have you tried oak sticks yet? they last a lot longer)I ordered some custom sticks and they don't last more than 6 hours of playing, the shoulder and the shaft break down real fast and they give off a lot of stick dust. I've noticed the Pro-Marks last twice as long if not longer than my customs.
Members Old Steve
Totally normal. I use wood tipped sticks, and most of my wear is the tip chipping and the shoulder shredding. Guys who play a ton rimshots often get shredding in the middle of the stick as well. Eventually, the 'shreds' turn into cracks and you'll see the top of your stick go flying across the room (and hopefully not into your eye!). Sticks are disposable items. Better to crack them at $5 a pair than cymbals at $150 each, IMHO.
Members ollie
about the japanese white oaks...if you havent tried them, get a pair. they are great sticks and in some cases (to me) feel much better than the traditional hickory. they last A LOT longer for hard hitters. Members Mr.Flamadiddle
I would try some oak sticks to see if you like them. Every stick is going to wear down some time or another, but one thing you could try is to low your volume on the set. I don't konw how hard you play on your cymbals or drums, but that could be a factor or it may not.

Members woody431
Yes, definetly try Oak sticks. I used the same pair of Pro Mark 727 5A's (oak) for 2 years. They are very strong, but right now I am using 747 Rock Nylon tips. Pro Mark oak. I use Vic Firth 8DN's as well and those are hickory. They are the same thickness as 7A, just a little longer. I play heavy metal and they hold up great.
