Hi guys: Do you think is a good idea to make a hole in the reso bass head? I need to mic it so I think it will help. What you guys think and how to make the hole. I have a powerstroke 3 on it.

thanks a lot.

Thats what I did when I started recording; put holes in my bass heads. It's said that you want a hole 6" in diameter or less..any more and its like not having a head on at all. I think I made mine a little over 5...and they sound pretty good. The best way to do it, is to look around you house and start measuring circular things. My example happened to be a cereal bowl. :p It's easiest if you flip the drum on its side, so the heads facing up. Just trace whatever you're using on the head, with anything like a magic marker, and use a exacto knife to cut. Holes are generally put on the bottom right side, if you're looking at your kit (not behind it). Just take your time cutting...I cannot stress this enough, lol. good luck

try mic'ing it before you cut the hole. Be sure not to put the mic TOO close to the head, which is what a lot people do. Sound travels in waves and if it's too close, you're going to pick up these waves before they fully develop, hence not getting your full sound. Personally i think bass drums sound better without holes in them.

i'm not a fan of holes. really limits how you can tune your drumhead, and for recording that's a VERY bad thing.

holes kinda give you just a snappie, punchie sound. whereas, non hole reso heads allow lots of tuning options that can really make the bass sing.

if you are going to use a hole, 4" are the max for me. good boomy sound, but still sounds like a bass drum, and not a cardboard box.

like stapes said, try recording stuff first, but IMHO, you dont need the hole.
