In my quest to find the best price on keller maple shells for my homemade drum kit, I came across remo acousticon shells. These are supposed produce more lower frequencies than maple, more higher frequencies than birch, and be less suseptibe to warping than wood shells. Anybody ever played these drums by remo?

I got a set of Remo Masteredge drums. I like them alot. Everyone who has played them like them. Bass drum has a ton of lows and good thump. Toms are loud and crisp. Good tuned low or high. Very good kit that you can purchase reasonably cheap if you shop around. Here is a picture ( I hope!).

I own a 9 piece Remo Quadura kit. It has the acousticon shells. My kit is well used. I will tell you the bad things about them first. My kit doesn't have the molded plastic bearing edges. It only has the acousticon shell with the egde cut into that material. If the drums are tuned really tight like the previous owner did, the edge likes to curl in. The area where the lugs attach also warped do to this over tightening. The lugs are made of cheap metal also. The area where the screws go into the lugs seems to crack if to much stress is put on them. My kit has the longer 3" lugs with the holes in them. I have gotten lots of good comments on the sound. They have a very wide tuning range. This kit can really sing and I would love to have a newer kit with the better edges (MasterEdge).

No problems with the hardware here. I don't know if the older ones used the same hardware as I got or not. IO know Remo has several different Acusticon shells as they have developed the line they have got better and better. I will say if you want a "wood" drum. These will not make you happy. They sound great but I still lust for a real Maple or Birch kit. Not to replace the Remos with but to add to my collection.
