Makeshift china...

I was bored last night and was staring at my 16" ZBT crash (its not my only one, i have 2 Z's.) So I decided to dig into my closet and pull out my 18" crash/ride. So i placed the 16 on top of the 18, and when I struck it with my finger, it sounded just like a china. I know this is an old idea and that its been done before, but it seems so cool cause it has almost exact china characteristics. Fast and trashy. So today i desided to flip it and mount it like that, now its even trashier. No biggie, I just thought i shoild share it with you guys. I also have 18 and 16 inch Z's.

What do you guys think i shuld do now? Or do you think this is a cool idea?

Lol, I was jamming at a friend's house this weekend, and he just happened to have a couple old cymbals around. The cymbals were terrible - they were old CB cymbals. I wanted another crash, so I figured I would mess around and mount one of the CB crashes. The thing was totally bent out of shape, and it looked like it would make no sound at all when I hit it. So I threw it on a stand, and when I played it it sounded just like a china! And I don't have a china cymbal either, and I've always wanted one. So, for now, I'm going to use this as my china. I don't care what it looks like - if I have to use it for shows I will. Sorry to hijack your thread LilDrummer.

No problem...

The 16 has a bunch of dents at the edges, but no cracks. I finished playing a couple minutes ago to the sounds of Metallica's Fuel (not alchohol) and i could use it as the china Lars uses live instead of the crash he uses in the album version (you probably know what I mean.)

Any more people bored with their gear who decided to expirament with it?

I mounted a broken 15" paiste hat on a broken 16" Zildjian crash to make sort of a cool "trash set" a few days ago. Sounds like crap, but ah well. I may buy a cheap 12" china to mount on an old Sabian 14" B8 hi-hat that I have to make something similar to Mike Portnoy's signature Low Stax. It probably won't sound that good, so I'm planning on getting the cheapest china I can so as not to spend too much.

I have several combinations of cymbals that sound sort of like Portnoy's Stax.

Pretty much, I'm picky about my crashes and ride, but I'll mount anything as an effect. Even if I only use it in one song, it's worth it to have if it fits. I only use the stax in two songs out of eight, but I still like to have it.
