The best and easiest way I've seen to cut a hole is to use the Holz kits. They include plastic rings to finish the hole and make it almost idiot proof. They go for $10-$15. Well worth the money.

They look good. Easy to use. And cheaper than replacing the head after you've messed up.

Remo makes a product called HOLZ. They act as a template / reinforcement ring which adheares to the inside of the head. I believe they come in 5" and 8" diameters.

Place the ring on the inside of the head at the desired location, take an X-acto and cut around the circumfrence of the template and you're done.

Whatever method you choose, make sure that the hole is reinforced in some way - I had a resonant head tear on me when the mic stand fell over into the drum.

good luck.
