Members Thexder
I just added an 18" Pearl Export floor tom to the Rockstar kit 12, 13, 16, 22.... WHAT was I thinking, not having one of these before??? I don't know if it's the nature of the 18" (as recently discussed) or the Pearl vs Tama, or the head (emporer uncoated with no res head right now just to tune).... But this is great! I have hated 2ply heads on the other toms and this one came with a 2ply so I was stuck for now, I tried tuning it up from loose, until it started to resonate freely, and suddenly it was like an earthquake... I will never part with this.

Members Ernie
Do they even make 20 inch floor toms, or is it just a converted bass drum (20x18 or something)? Is it a custom job or something?

You used to be able to get 20" Floor Toms and during the late 60's & early 70's, Ludwig had a select number of 22" Floors (They were custom made for Carmine Appice and John Bonham, so the tried marketing them.) I've got a 20" Floor as well. I had to buy a 20" Ludwig floor tom through "Not So Modern Drummer"'s classified ads in 1998 so that I could snag the hoops off of it for the 20" floor tom that I was building.I've got a new set of hoops now, so I think I'm going to reassemble the 20" Ludwig, and sell it on E-bay. The reason they quit selling them, is because it was an 8-lug hoop, and 8-lugs on a 20" isn't the easiest thing in the world to tune. Instead of discontinuing them, they should have made the things 10-lugs. artstarcordia is right. 20" Floor toms are awesome; once you play on a well tuned 20" Floor tom, you'll be going "Holy {censored}, I want one of these!"Once I start building again, I'm going to build a suspended 16"x22" "tom" (or should that be a "hand bass" drum?) You can get 20" hoops every once in a while off of E-bay.They do not fit over a kick head, so you have to special order 20" floor tom heads, and Remo makes them in Pinstripes, all of their main wetherking lines, and in Ebony-but for some reason not Ebony Pinstripes. I keep 4 or 5 of Pinstripes around for spares, and I have a clear Emperor and Ambassador as backups. My storage space above the bandroom looks like a drum shop these days. I engineered a recording with Cindy Blackman on drums and she had a couple really monster floor toms. The lowest one was AT LEAST 20". It sounded great in the room, but we couldn't get a close mic sound out of it. It would just "disapear". Her tech also had it tuned really low. You'd hear it by its self, but in the mix it was gone. So... we ended shifting everything up one drum. She wanted the tom count for a few things, so we added one smaller tom at the top and shifted everything down for her and life was good. -Tom

If I do "close" mic them, I put the Mic about 12" above the drum and about 6" away from it to give it a little room to breathe, but generally the sound that I want out of the toms is coming from the overheads. ps. I haven't heard back from Brent yet. Tim

All the other's (including the snare) are just for focus and often times they don't get used at all. I've done a lot of jazz sessions where I've used one mic about 6 feet away from the drums in omni and that's it! This was an odd situation... it just wasn't sounding good in the mix at all and it wasn't from my inexperience... I spent a good two days with the drum tech on this. It was just too low... it was a new kit of Cindy's and she was having a fit to use it. It had never been used before. so... it just didn't happen. Sometimes you just have to move on. I usually have drum tech's there, either the artists, or one I hire and her's is/was good. He did some quick swapping around and we were back in action. Everything else was good. She's a great drummer, despite some comments I heard on here about her being "boring". She's consistant, and knows how to hit the "pocket". She locks with the bass and sounds pretty funky. I liked it! -Tom

Is it a custom job or something? Hi, yes Tama made 20 inch floor toms form 1980-1986. They made them for the Imperialstar, Superstar and even the Artstar Cordia lines, which I have. They tend to show up on ebay every now and then. SIDE NOTE: If you get a 20 inch floor tom, you have to order the heads, the 20 inch floor toms don`t accept a BASS DRUM head, the depth from the top of the head to the metal ring is too deep. There was an Imperialstar 20 inch floor tom on ebay within the last month.
