Members odomreb
I play in a local rock band in Nashville, & we got some pretty decent gigs last year, so I'm looking to upgrade. Now I've got a Sunlite set, sounds ok, snare is average, floor tom sounds lame, others are OK. Cymbals are fine - I've upgraded them over the last year. Looking to spend about $500 - $750 on a little bit better set, with no need for cymbals. What do you experts out there suggest? Thanks!
Members rumblebelly
Pacific FS (birch kit for $599) or CX (maple for about $800ish). Pacific makes some damn fine kits that are pretty affordable.
Members Snake
Experts? HA! Yep, those Pacific kits seem to get rave reviews from everyone who tries them. I've heard go things about the Gretsch Catalina Birch too. Of course, you can't go wrong with an intermediate kit from one of the big time manufacturers either - Tama Rockstar, Pearl Export, Yamaha Stage Custom, etc. If you're not opposed to used gear and have enough time to be patient, you can sometimes find a real bargain on a pro kit (Tama Starclassics, Pearl Sessions/Masters, Yamaha Birch/Beech/Maple Customs, etc.). Good luck

Members humble_pie
Not much to start with. What sound are you trying to find? Would different heads do the trick? Have you played other kits to see the difference that shell thickness and mounting systems make?
Members odomreb
I've got clear Remo heads now, haven't been changed in a while. I may try new heads first - I'd like a fuller sound, especially on the floor tom. Also, the feet on the bass drum on my current set are cheap--they don't hold during a gig - I usually put a concrete block in front of it to keep it from sliding away from me, & that ain't what I want to be doing. I'm looking at MapexM now - there's some good ones for $650 or so. Any other ideas would be helpful. Thanks!
