Members Rimshot500
I am about to order a new Ludwig snare drum. Just need some opinions on the following styles. I need to decide on the following: Ludwig 6.5*14 Hand Hammered Bronze Ludwig 6.5*14 Supra-Phonic (Brass edition) I play rock, funk, blues. Am I making a good choice and which one would you prefer? Is it absolutely necessary to spend the extra $150.00 on a Black Beauty? Thanks for the help guys.
Members dogxray
Is a metal shelled snare a must?
Members Rimshot500
Well I do have a yamaha maple custom snare, but I am looking for a different sound. More of a punchy, metal crack that will break through the band on a new level.
Members seahawk
I'd go with the Supraphonic......... its got 10 lugs..and a real cracker!....................I don't use the brass ones mine is a regular '69 an di love it!.......but you get a tighter drum with the 10 lugs(if tuned right)

Members rhino bucket
i've seen guys post some info. on how the deferent shells are suppose to sound, but don't know where they're getting it from.about all i remember is that the softer the metal, the warmer it is suppose to sound or similar to wood. though if the wood shells are really thick they can start to sound metally. also isn't the hammering suppose to warm the sound some. this is just guessing, but i'd guess the bronze is going to be warmer or more wood sounding than the brass especially since it's hammered. the regular metal super phonic might be worth looking at as well. also dunnett has a more affordible working class type snare that is suppose to be really good, and has lots of the quality features that he is known for. these prices are from a midwest percussion catalog. LB552K 6.5x14 bronze hammered phonic $379.95LB402B 6.5x14 crome/brass $359.95LB417 6.5x14 blk. beauty p-85 $405.95LM402 6.5X14 metal super phonic p-85 $304.95tube lugs adds about $20 on most of the models
Members Old Steve
I think the supraphonic would be my choice. It's one of the most versitile drums ever made. It's only been recorded on about a gazillion songs ever. If you're looking for a 'safe bet'...something that you just can't go wrong with...it's the supraphonic.
