Drum manufacturing - do they ship them out with heads on them?

Yeah, another 'tuning' thread..(somewhat). I had an idea the other day, but I realized I didn't have a clue what happened to them inbetween the factory and the drum shop. How do manufacturers ship out drums? Heads off, everything shipped in a box? Heads on, tuned...or just on?

Every time I've bought a kit its been from a shop, where I lugged the drums out to the car...never in a box.

So whats the deal..eh?

When I bought my kit the floor tom had to be ordered separately. I pulled it out of the box, heads on. Seemed somewhat tuned (i.e. the heads weren't just thrown on and finger tightened...they were tightened down) but who knows what happens during shipping.

new kits usually come with the cheap factory heads. This does a couple things - makes the kits playable out of box without the company having to spend $$ on good heads, and they protect the bearing edges. If there were no heads on the drums, the rim would not be at the level where it could protect the edges.

This is true....I know its weird, but I'm asking these questions for a purpose. ;) Anyone wouldn't happen to know how they are installed at the factory...maybe? I guess if they had enough man power just tuning the heads, they'd be fine. This is my best guess as to what they do...

Even if the heads were tuned at the factory, more then likley they would be way out of tune by the time they got to you. Tempature changes, stretching, vibration, etc all will cause the heads to go out of tune. By the time you actually take a drum out of the box it could have been sitting in that box for months.

That was my first concern when I noticed my kit was shipped with heads off. Thankfully it was packaged such that the actual bearing edge wasn't in direct contact with anything rigid.
