Members Old Steve
I don't think they've changed as much as some would have you believe. I use a 20" A Zildjian Rock Ride that I bought new in 1983 (ok, that's close to the 70's anyway) and it sounds about the same as the current version. Frankly, I think if you know what sound you're looking for, you'll be able to find a 'modern' cymbal that will get you the sound you want. The trick is knowing the sound you want before you go shopping.

Members BluesBro
I think you definately need to know what sound you want before you buy. Before I purchased my A custom 20" ride, I listened to alot of sounds and spoke with a bunch of drummers to get their opinion and to find out what they played. I play Blues and sit in from time to time with an established band. For many years, the Zildjian A's were the workhorse. I also like the Zildian A Sweet Ride. It has a similar sound to my A Custom. Good luck _________________ "I dig chicks on Cell Phones"
