Members keanu reeves
so im about to pick me up some toms from adonis drums -- im a little about the bearing edge... they offer a double 45 and a round-over/45 option. i use brushes a lot but im also want to be able to play rock music when i want to. im thinking ill be using single ply heads?? i dont know. im slightly confused. help? Members TheBoatCanDream
I think that a sharper edge means you get more overtones and less mud. A rounder edge will be muddier, duller, and warmer. I think. I could very well be wrong.
Members keanu reeves
no. i think youre right. thats whe way they explain it on the web site. i guess im just asking. do single ply heads resonate TOO much on double 45 edges? i want a lot of sensitivity (brushes) but i also want a little bit of pitch drop while the head resonates.. lazer like -- which sounds better in a rock context. Members TheBoatCanDream
Pitch bends happen when the batter and resonant heads are in tune with themselves but not with eachother. For response, I think that single plys on top would be fine. If you want a more compressed or heavy sound, go to two ply, but if you want something that would be better for jazz, accoustic whatever, or fusion, then diplomat single ply would be good - coated, renaissance, or fiberskyn. Clear ambassadors would be fine though, very versitile.

Members TheBoatCanDream
No, what I said is true whether it's a sharp edge or rounded one. I really think that tuning, head selection, and touch are way more important. Then again my drums are 40 years old and made from luan, maybe on a better kit it makes a much larger difference. I do know that I encorporated one tom into my kit (it's a bit of a frankenstine) which was made in the pearl factory back in the 60's, it had a rather sharp edge compared to my ludwigs and had a brighter sound. I sanded down the edge on the batter side. It sounds fine now, but I can't say that I paid attention to how much of a difference the sanding really made right before and after and with the same heads.
