How do you play it? Do you do the correct hi hat part or just play sraight notes? For some damn reason, I can't get my hand to do the "straight swing" on the hats and then do the kick part...

Was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to play this correctly...

thank, Jason

I don't, honestly, but I am a Tool enthusist and try to get the timing down as well.

Here's what I hear...

Hats: X X O X X O X X O

(hit, hit, open hit)

Bass: XX XX XX

Snare: X X

It took me a while to get the open and closed hats, but try it on other songs you play and it will get better.

Good luck.

I have the most trouble getting the kick part smooth with the hi hat work. It's very very very basic.. and I can play things alot more complicated... But for some reason, this timing has me messed up! I'll keep working on it!>

Yeah, that opening fill isn't anything special.. but played at that speed, it sounds complicated... I'm sure I don't pull it off exactly.. but close...

I will try to explain. The hihat is played more like a triplet. Open the hats on the last note of the triplet. The snare fits in between ever other triplet. I am not sure if I wrote it right I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. Its a game of counting 16th notes and playing triplets with your hihat hand. When you get it you will say man that was not as hard as I made it out to be!! It really a simple "disco" type beat. TOOL and DISCO??????

Hope this helps!!

This is a cut and paste job so the count is off from the notes. But you should be able to get the picture.

For me, it was the hi hat triplet that caused me the most grief when trying to play the verses. What helped me get it was just focusing on keeping the hi hats going (xxo-xxo-xxo-xxo) over and over again and then GRADUALLY integrating the bass drum, then the snare, etc.

Right now I'm working on getting the "Rosanna shuffle" down. I've almost got it, but what usually happens is I'll butcher the hell out of it and play my own half-assed version of it. Anyways, the key is to start everything VERY slowly and then speed up as your limbs feel more confident.

As for getting the timing of the bass drum hits too go along with the triplets of the hi hat, emit the 2 closed hits and only play the passage with the open hits on the hi hat. This will give you a feel for the timing with the bass hits and hi hat pedal opening and closing.. Once you nail it with only the open hi hat hits, move on to all of the hits.
