Internal Mics

I've been thinking about buying internal mics for my kit. My problem is the only system I can find any (limited) info on is MAYs internal kit. Do any of you know who else makes them, and which mics in your opinion are the best ones out there. I play very hard and like my toms and bass drum as deep as possible. Is it okay, sound wise to mix mics? i.e. Audio technica on the bass and Sures on the toms?

Any info you can give me is appreciated.

Sleef:

I use MayEA mics internally and they are the bomb!

I use AKG D112's in both toms and the bass drum and a sawed off shure 57 in the snare drum (facing down) with a splitter utilizing an external 57 on the top head as well. As far as I know, they make the only true internal mics that also feature an adapter system so that you do not have to drill the shell, and you also do not lose the functionality of your drum vents (even thought the wires to pass through the vents)

Anyway, see this similar thread as well:

Thanks,

DJ

I love mine - have been using them for 3 years or so now....do a search on my screen name and you will find some more info about them.

I also - have an extra tour set that im not using if you want to buy them.....they have the audix d's in the - D6 for kick, D4 (4) in the toms and a D2 for the snare.

D4's good for small toms too? Was thinking of d1 snare, d2 toms, d6 bass.

Or the e604 on toms, sm57 on snare a D112 on bass.

I had two D4 mics and liked the D2 much better. The D4 is suited for a lower tone. I run an 8,10,12 tom combination. So I know that it sounded better on my kit with the D2's. The D4 was not as clear and had a muddy sound to it. Just what I found with my kit.

Not saying your wrong...however these suckers are so so sensitve to placement and tune that just changing heads and position would be enough to notice a major difference.

The D2 and D4 are very very similar and in fact have almost the same freq responce...the D4 has just a bit lower response.

Due to the lower response and high OHM output the D4 on paper would be the mic of choice.

Also important to note is the necessity of EQ with the internals....the EQ slope is COMPLETLY different than externals. Muddying the mix is easy to do with these and your problem may have been due to the lower response of the D4. If you EQ out the lower end on the high toms you have a bit better luck....in fact you MUST otherwise you end up with rumble from the kick (which will muddy up the mix real fast).

Anyway....

I have CF drums and wanted to make sure i had the D4's that would capture all the low end warmth i could get....you can always EQ out stuff you dont want but it's harder to go the other way.
