I looked it up and the differences are:

Alesis DM5

Voices - 540 editable

Drum Sets - 32 user programmable

Trigger Inputs - 12 Mono + 1 hi-hat or foot switch

Built In Sequencer - NO

Hi-Hat Nuance CV - Open/Close

Cymbal Choke Capabilities - NO

User Adjustable Effects Processor - NO

Roland TD-5

Voices - 210, fully editable

Drum Sets - 32 user programmable

Trigger Inputs - 8 stereo+1 Hi-hat

Built In Sequencer - NO (has talking metronome/click track)

Hi-Hat Nuance CV - Full

Cymbal Choke Capabilities - YES

User Adjustable Effects Processor - reverb

roland has the variable hi hat ,chokeable cymbals, and dual triggers wich are nice to have. Specialy the hi hat. Although I am not sure the prodigy kit hi hat controller supports that.

My dtx2 module has open, closed, foot close - no half open

It is acualy varying degrees between closed to open. more you open it, the more open it sounds. Also is velocity sensitive and can be run dual trigger to get the shouldering of the stick sound.

Also can do foot chic and splashes with them. It is a great feature.

I've used both the Alesis DM-5 and several of the Roland brains. If I were going to buy one between those two it would be the Roland. The DM-5 cymbal sounds are better IMO, but the drums are better on the Roland, plus I hated the hi-hat on the DM-5 because you only have open or closed, nothing in between.
