Members organum
I typicaly used a 12x9 first tom on a snare stand. When I did this it usualy gave me a dead sound but when i used it on its suspension mount it sounded fine. I recently got an 18x16 tom so now i set up; instead of 12x9 tom1, 14x11 tom2, 16x13 floor tom 3; i use 14 first, 16 floor, and 18 floor, the 14 on the snare stand doesn't give me the dead sound. I was curious to know if I got that sound from the 12 because it is a 12 and snare stands are generaly made for 13-15 inch drums. I am using tama starclassic perf. Members rca
I have no idea why your 12 inch tom sounded dead (no sustain?) on a snare stand. I regularly use both a snare stand and a RIMs mount suspended from a cymbal stand on two identical 12 inch toms. I cannot tell a difference in sustain between them. My speculation is that the tom was not properly mounted in the snare basket. Most snare stands are adjustable to handle 12 inch drums. Also, it should not hurt the sound if the snare basket was too wide. The drum would just be laying loose in the basket.
Members organum
well the stand is tight on the drum. i was also having the problem of tension rod loosening on the bottom head so i might have tightened the stand too tight and in turn the loosening was causing the dead sound. Members Mopzilla
I think it was Pearl that sold snare stand spacers that attach onto the holders to accomodate a smaller snare drum. Or just make your own; take some hard rubber and glue it into the corners of the basket arms. Also, you can get a RIMS-type mount like this Cannon for $20 (a RIMS costs a hell of a lot more) and mount it on a cymbal stand. Members AsGoodAsBonzo
don't clamp the stand so tight on the drum..i do the same thing w/ my 13in tom..if the snare basket is too tight the drum will sound dead..lososen it up a bit..but not too much..cause then it might fall off in the middle of moby dick:D
