Members Royman27
I have a question about what are some good choices to use for top heads, and what are good to use for bottom heads. I like that really PUNCH sound from my rack toms, I can't really explain how I like my floor toms but it's kinda like a really low lingering sound sort of, I'm not sure if that's good or bad? haha, and I like a kinda really low pitched thud sound from the base, like lars ulrich's base. I would like to hear many suggestions, thx. -Warren
Members rca
Most drummers use single ply clears on the bottom. To learn how the different heads sound on your drums, buy an assortment of 12" heads and try them out on a tom. Start with a clear single ply batter, as that has no muffling effect at all. Then a single ply coated, etc. The loudest heads by the way are thin single ply clears because they have no muffling. Thicker heads are a tradeoff for increased durability. Thin single ply clears are also the most resonant for the same reason.
Members agogobill
All you need to know about tuning and then some ... Realise that the drum sounds that you hear and want to imitate with your kit have been electronically processed in the studio and/or mixing board. Another aspect to this is that you're sitting behind your kit - you won't hear the same sounds as when you're listening in front. And still another aspect is that you may not HIT the same way that your favorite drummers do. The best way to achieve anything close is to first learn how to tune your drums. It takes time, but you CAN get a decent sound through good tuning, even with crappy heads. I love copy and paste
Members rumblebelly
Clear double ply batters and clear one ply resonant heads seem to create a nice punchy sound. Using coated heads on the batters will dampen the sound some, making it sound darker and warmer (if that makes sense).
