So Tuesday I bought a kit.

A Tama Stagestar.

Interesting little kit.

10 12 14 18 5X13 steel.

I figured if I could use the snare drum and cymbal stands live, the purchase would be worth the price.

Turns out the snare stand won't fit a 14" drum(?) So I tried the snare on my practice kit. I put a powerstroke 3 on there, and it sounds fine. Crank it up and it sounds annoying as hell (maybe fine for an aux firecracker snare.) Loosened up the batter a bit and it works. I'm sick of my acrolite anyway.

The bass drum is small. I've never owned an 18" before, but I've used a 16" FT as a BD for guerilla street performances before (that dinna dound too good either.) It sounds small. it's empty now, maybe if I put something in there I can get a more satisfying thud.

the toms are small. Same diameter as my FAST yammy toms, just shallow. easy to position. I put some emperors on 'em. they sound... small. From the appearance of the heads, I believe the bearing edges are not true. Not surprised, (whaddya want for nothin, rubber biscuit?)

The drums were (are) in good shape, rarely played by a grade-school aged girl for 1.5 yrs.

The chrome is not real nice.

I'll continue Fing aroind with them. Possible uses:

kit to set up @ home when I get a house. (it'll be a small house.)

Kit to use for guerilla street performances or very small stages.

a nice gift for a drums-obsessed niece or nephew if one develops

I put a towel in my Yammy 18" bd, and it helped a lot. It's just flopping around in there, but I'm guessing it's helping absorb some of the standing waves in the drum.

welcome to the world of small bassdrums.

you might enjoy something like the Evans EQ heads. put a patch on the batter so you don't dent it, and tune 'em low. you may not need to stuff it.

also, for your guerilla antics...mount a handle onto the drum. with a cymbal on the BD, and a snare tightly clamped into the stand, you could carry your whole kit in 2 hands. just set the 2 pieces down and start playing!

hats and throne?

AH, good questions. (or question, whatever).

Since you're all guerilla you gotta go light-n-fast. Don't carry a throne. Just setup by things you can sit on.

For hat... don't need that either, do ya?

a) rely on the cymbal you mount onto the BD

b) get one of those hat extension things and screw it onto the BD, then use a pair of cheap 10" splashes

or use this for a hat... COOL . It's not too stealth, though.
