You know, sometimes most of you welcome newbies and truly help but when you act like true assholes - that's when the moderator should step in.

Answers like this are also reasons to turn us away just as much as Aqualungs responses to the "Women in Drumming" post!

Instead of making something up just don't answer or tell me you don't know if you feel the need to respond!

You got me on one of those days and I am indeed going to make a complaint!

Gotcha. You're right, not helpful. To me, it seems obvious that they just don't know the answer and are joking around.

For the record, I'm sorry I don't know how to date the Pro-Ms other than the serial. I guess you probably don't have the serial, right? You're thinking of making a purchase? Maybe the seller can provide the serials?

Yes, we're making a purchase. Trying to choose between Yamaha Stage Customs and these Pro-M's. Both are 6 piece sets and about the same price. I'm thinking the Pro-M's are better and we won't have to get another set for quite some time.

You're probably gonna do well either way.

Personally, I can vouch for the Yammys, I own a set and probably always will.

I can't guess the age of the Mapexez, and if they're in good condition age shouldn't make too much difference.

also the stackmasters post was goddam hilarious. sorry. you'd need a Mapex employee to tell the age of a kit from a photo without any other info.

The whip has been cracked! Back to work! :D

With most modern drums, unless you're really into gear talk, there's no way to know the exact year without a serial number or dated badge.

If your purchase isn't time sensitive, I'd recommend taking a few good pictures and perhaps e-mailing the company's customer service? Most drum companies are small and dedicated enough to have excellent customer service that is responsive, especially if you tickle them with a line about "I'm hoping this lead me to a relationship with your company" or something along those lines.

And, if I may throw in 2 cents, I'd go for the Stage Customs. I've been playing them for about 4 years and have received more compliments on my drum sound than friends with DWs and Orange County kits. It may come down to the ability to tune, but I am FLOORED by the possibility of sound with those drums. Feel free to check out the track on the MySpace page in my signature if you want to hear Stage Customs tuned for rock.

Best of luck in your decision! :thu:

Yeah... see if the sales guy will let you grab the serial # off the Bass and the snare so you can look it up. Come to think of it, I'm not sure how you'll go about looking it up. Mapex website? Call the main business office, and ask 'em to check?

Also, I'll echo some of the others: These are both great kits, and I think you'll be happy with the instrument either way.

Have you had the chance to set the up and play on them? If it were ME, I would let that be the deciding factor.

edit: are you upgrading from another kit?

jacarual-

I am sorry I didn't step in earlier. I have been up to my eyeballs in password resets for the over 500 forum members that lost their password in the recent software upgrade. (since Sunday!)

Anyhow, while in most cases, a wise crack response may be inappropriate, I don't think that was the case here. These guys were just trying to lighten up their day with a little humor.

As far as the Mapex Pro-Ms, they were are a product that is a decendent of a product that I helped develope when I was with Mapex called the Mars Pro Series.

They were what we called a "maple sandwich" drumset, which was basically a maple ply/mahogony/basswood core/mahogony/maple finish ply drumshell.

When they came out, they were the only laquer drumset at their price point on the market.

Depending on what you are looking for, these are a great budget-minded drum set and will give you a great sound. I know several guys here in Nashville that are Mapex endorsers, and many of them have the high end kits for the road and studio, but use these as practice kits at home, or at SIR.

As far as the age, you would have to call Mapex Customer Service.

Hope this helps.

DJ

I'm over it but thanks anyways - you could have made your joke after you told me you didn't know though. Bad day I guess! I knew I needed the serial number but thought someone here may be like really into drums and years built like they are cars... I think I've decided against the damn Mapex because they won't answer my emails and that pisses me off too - so he's not worthy of my money!

Nope just us figments. I can get around a drum kit. Figured that qualifies me to stick around. The real gurus probably leave in disgust. Ask old Steve about pancakes.

It's good you were able to make a decision. I think the Yamahas are manufactured to stricter standards. You shouldn't be disappointed. :thu:

That's odd. I've been playing Mapex for about three years now and I've never had a problem getting them to respond to emails or any probs with their customer service whatsoever. They probably get a ton of emails so, understandably, it has taken them a day or two to respond, but they always have.

I can't tell you an exact year of manufacture, but judging by the type of finish and the style of badge I'm guessing that kit couldn't be more than a couple of years old.

You're a little on the touchy side these days aren't you, jacarual?

That was my joke. :D Hey, at least I waited until after I took a stab at answering your question.

Sorry Rockbeat - I had a really bad morning. I'm not touchy in general. Just rubbed me the wrong way especially after reading the post from Sherman...

I know that you all like to joke around and it is a fun place to hang out. Aqua totally cracks me up and I can take his humor anyday. It's just a different type of humor....

I'm pretty sure we're not going with the Mapex and will stick with the Yammy's!

Thanks;)

Sorry Rockbeat - the jerk must not want to sell them very bad because I've sent several messages after he sent me the pics and he hasn't returned any of my messages. So, I decided to call - no return call - so I figure too damn bad for him!

And Aqua - the Sonor was in the running but they didn't have a good color and we're picky about that. I've been watching their web-site!!!

You'll get over it!
