Members ogrik
Definitely not new to drumming, just new to the idea of wood hoops... so I thought I'd ask around. What're your preferences? What kind of sound does a wood hoop give that's different than a metal hoop? Or is it just more of a style thing?
Members 1001gear
Well rimshots would be the biggest division. Other than that, the lower mass of maple hoops may allow more resonance with faster response. I tried Ayottes when they first came out and other than they looked extremely cool, didn't think anything special of them.

What kind of sound does a wood hoop give that's different than a metal hoop? Or is it just more of a style thing? I have two Ayottes-one with wood hoops and one with metal hoops. The wood hoops definitely make the drums sound warmer. The last engineer I worked with said the drums don't sound as "boingy" as other drums, which he really liked. I would describe it as almost a "vintage" sound, if that makes any sense. The cross stick with a wood hoop is great and absolutely blows away a steel hoop snare. Having said that, I prefer a steel hoop snare, just because I can get that "crack" and that beautiful rim shot with it. My preference would be a wood hoop kit but a steel hoop snare. Members Carminemw
I think I would lean more towards metal. I love the warmth of the wood tones for the drums themselves, but I LOVE crackin hard rim shots...brittle an powerful!
