Members Kirk Markarian
Yamaha Copper Snare Drum 5-1/2" x 14". Dry, warm, robust and quite loud, depending on the head. I used Fiberskyns and they are loud, and coated ambassadors are even louder. Plus the snare just looks classy as hell.

Members junkdrum
I've got a couple of Pearl free-floating snare drums that sound great and didn't set me back very much. One is a brass picollo 3 1/2 x 14. The other is a 5 x 14. The nice thing is, for a little extra you can get interchangable shells that can be swapped out by removing the top head. I've got a brass and a maple shell for the 5 x 14. I don't feel the need for anything else right now.

Skip the acrolite. Get a Supraphonic. You can get a used one for little more than an acro. Worth it. The Pearl Maple 6X14 I played in college was an utter joy. I'd love to have one of those. You can get a LOT of snare drum for $500.
Members Majoria
+1 on the Pearl Free Floater. I use a maple 14x5.5 and got it for around $350 new (list is $700).

Members FitchFY
Tama 5.5x14" Starclassic Maple snare - I've used it on 85% of the recordings I've done, and it's VERY versatile. Low and fat, high and tight... I love that drum!
Members Super 8
I think I paid maybe $250 or $300 for my Pork Pie 13" maple some years ago. I love it, it's a sweet snare. To answer your question, go out and try a bunch of snares. The one that feels and sounds best to you is the best one. If it cost $500 or $75, makes absolutely no difference. Personally, I'd never spend $500 on a snare.
Members Mickey66
Whats a good sounding snare drum around or under $500 for rock? mostly modern hard rock and alternative. A-lot of choices here but if you want loud..... I mean really loud and a great sound I would look into DW snare drums....I have seen some in your price range....in fact I picked up a DW 13" all maple snare drum new at Guitar Center for $200 on sale....I have to look for heads sometimes because I don't find a-lot of 13" Batter or snare heads in stock(can be ordered though) but there is always the web. The good deals are out there this time of year you just have to look.

Members SYMBOLIC
Spaun's custom stuff is made in the US. Their Z series are made over seas. I don't know about the stuff that they are selling at GC or through MF.
Members Jarick
I'd go with a Supra-phonic 5x14 or Black Beauty 5x14. Chad Smith snare is great for $220.
Members manoeuver
I've heard very good things about the Chad Smith. Unless you have a very specific sound in mind, a great snare can be had for lessn $300.
