Hi guys, i have been spredding around that i'm a metal drummer :p and i have the greatest combination (my opinion :p) its a Tama kit with Sabian AA_metal x AAX metal and B8 cymbals all from sabian, i love this brand and i wanted to know who also use sabian cause i mostly read that people use zildjian or paiste or even meinl, i know it's a personal decition you have to make but why the brand your using? tell me and tell me what music you play and why YOUR cymbals are the best for YOUR music.

All sabian here. Both Sabian and Zildjian make everything from crap to brilliant cymbals. AA's a good line of cymbals. I play a 22" AA medium thin ride that is to most awesomest ride for my style of playing. 16" medium AA crash is also the best 16" crash i've ever heard. 18" AA crash has abit tomuch bite and not enough warmth/decay. It'll be replaced sometime.

AND, i'll say it again: 13" B8Pro hats cost almost nothing and sound like a billion bucks.

I play indie rock/punk-ish music mostly, but apart from the 18" crash, these cymbals have a good range in them to do other stuff aswell.

For small gigs without proper PA i usually swap the 18"AA for my AAX Metal Crash. Loud and not as agressive as the AA. It just has bigger dynamic.

Bastiaan,

I have Pearl MLX with a mix of Sabian Pro's,AA's,AAX's,and a HH.

In all I own 22 cymbals from different manufacturers, but the majority are Sabian.

I really miss my Paiste ColorSounds that my Bass player stole for drug money.....

Did you know that Sabian is an offshoot of Zildjian?

One of the brothers decided to start his own company!

@Carminemw;

Name the Zildjian brother, and how he came up with the name "SABIAN" to claim your free cheese grater!!!:poke:

No "googling"....:cop:

Quality Cymbals.

I Play hard rock/metal/Fusion/anything.

I must add that on my last trip to;

http://www.drumsonsale.com/

my "local" drumshop.......(no guitar bullsheeite)

My eyes/ears were opened to many cymbals that sound tremendous from different makers.

When it comes to cymbals, I'm not brand loyal, although I'm partial to my Paiste's. I play a mix of Zildjian and Paiste's right now, each chosen for the sound the particular cymbal produces. If I find a Sabian I like, I'll buy it too, but I've owned most of my cymbals for many years and haven't needed any new cymbals lately.

My main ride is a 22" Avedis Zildjian which is about 30 years old. I've never found another ride that could replace it's great sound. I prefer 'fast' crashes with a sharp attack with quick fade, but I do have a few with quite lengthy resonation.

I play lots of different styles but my current band is doing a mix of classic, southern and alt rock.

I don't care about brand either, but I ended up with mostly Sabians:

14" AA Light Hats (used)

17" A Custom Crash (bought it new) - Zildjian

10" AAX Splash (bought new)

20" AA Tight Ride (used)

18" AA Stage Crash (used, willing to trade/sell)

14" AAX Studio Crash

Weird combo dude.....

Southern rock of what style?

Jamoe Johnson/Butch Trucks of 38 Special?

Dixie Dregs/Rod Morganstein?

Artimus Pyle style/LenerdSkinnard ?

Try "Interstate Luv Song" by STP. Bridges all 3 genres.
:thu:

Yeah, we just play songs we like and folks like to hear, not really limited to any specific genre.

Jaimoe Johanson and Butch Trucks (Allman Brothers) are big influences on me, as are Paul Riddle (MTB) and Artimus Pyle (Lynyrd Skynyrd), but I like lots of other drummers from many genre's.

I agree with you about STP ;)

I'm not really brand specific either, but I play mostly Zildjian. I have a couple Wuhan splashes, and a Sabian 16" china that i do like. This is on the rock band set-up. I also play in a blues band and my crash is a Sabian 16" AA medium, which, and this just goes to show we all have different tastes, I don't really care for, (Walt Disney:D) . But I only use it for rehearsal. I'm about to go on the hunt though for a change and intend on checking out some Paistes. Later

Sabina was founded by Robert Zildjian, and the name Sabian comes from his kids names SAlly, BIlly, ANdrew

Beat me to it, but I'll add a little to yours. :p

From what I've heard over the years, there was a dispute between the two brothers about what to do with the secret formula for the original Zildjian cymbals that had been passed down. Good ol' Bob Z. decided to just leave and start his own company. When faced with a decision on what to name it, he took the first two letters from each of his kids' names, which, as you said, are Sally, Billy, and Andy. Thus, SABIAN.

BTW. I have a bias towards Sabian because my idol is Mike Portnoy. But I try to leave that out of the equation when cymbal shopping, and go with whatever sounds best, regardless of the brand. With that said, though, my latest purchase was a 16" Sabian HHX crash, and the thing sounds absolutely KILLER.

Sabian's alright, but I'm more of a fan of Zildjian and Paiste. I like cymbals that stand out and have a unique sound and tons of expressive possibilities, and I haven't yet heard a Sabian that can accomplish that. For example, I'm unaware of any Sabian ride that is even in the same ballpark as the Dark Energy Mk. 1, I haven't heard a Sabian Hi-hat that can even come close to a 13" A Custom Mastersound in terms of pure funkiness, none of their crashes can make that benchmark crash sound that the A Custom Fast Crash can, and God knows that there are hundreds of crashes that are infinitely more expressive than any of Sabian's offerings.

That's not to say that I dislike Sabain - I think that they're an exceptional value for the sound that you get - but if I'm looking for the best cymbals that I can get my hands on, cymbals that have *soul*, Sabians never seem to cut it for me.

I have a mix of 4 brands, (only 1 sabian 16" AA medium crash - sounds a bit gongy to me)

10" Zildjian A custom splash

14" Paiste 2002 sound edge black label hats

15" Zildjian Thin crash 70's

15" Zildjian A top hat/ Zildjian A Custom mastersound edge bottom (killer mix)

16" Sabian AA medium crash

16" Wuhan China

16" zildjian Thin crash 70's

17" Zildjian A custom projection crash

18" Zildjian A medium thin crash

18" Zildjian A medium crash

19" Zildjian A rock crash

19" Zildjian AAX China ( giving me hearing loss at an alarming rate!!)

20" A Custom medium ride (I crash it instead)

22" Paiste 2002 medium ride Black label

24" Paiste 2002 ride (red label- dont use it but keep it for some reason)

This set up is used for top 40 rock and classic rock , but have used it for country(gag me with an ether soaked rag), blues and just about any other genre people will hire me for

So what's perfect? I hate metal. nah. Actually I like a lot of it - drumming included. There's just too much of it that's not even up to interesting and then it gets worse. Personally I'd play any metal I was up to if it was well written. Excepting creepy evil stuff. EEEoooo....

Ok just wanted to get that out of the way. :D

I currently use 2 B8 rides, a Plus and a regular. I prefer the regular. It has more lathing.

A 14" Avedis crash

14" Newbeats and 14" B8s, cross paired.

This is a practice rig and works very well for the coordination stuff I work on. The rest of my cymbals sit off to the side waiting for work.

I'm not a brand loyalist. Perhaps if I were an endorsee I would be, but I'm not... therefore I seek out the best possible sound within a given budget.

So I have 3 Sabians. 2 16" crashes and an 18" crashride. Awesome cymbals! Oh yeah, Sabian hihats too.

I also have a Paiste 2002 18" ride. Best ride cymbal I've ever heard.

I also have an old Zindjian 16" crash. Sounds great! In addition, a ZBT splash and an old A.Zildjian hihat bottom that I swap in when we're playing jazz.

Plus, an Atlas 16" dark crash. Haven't seen them around recently, but some of those Atlas cymbals (produced in the UFIP plant) were great - mine certainly is.

Top that off with a trio of Wuhan chinas and a Wuhan gong. Why would you restrict yourself to one brand??

wow :D still like the posts so far :p.

good point of most guys that say "why are you loyal to 1 brand"

like DTportnoyDT from the lake said, i started my love for sabian just like him by listening to portnoy, and i always have the idea that Tama and Sabian in combination are the best, that fancy thingy about zildjian being the godfather of sabian i didn't knew that one but it's making me {censored}ING ANGRY, nahh just kidding :p but what if you guys could get any endoorsments you want, then i would choose Tama and Sabian (in the higher rankings of price and quality) i think that the better series of both brands are {censored}ing killer. So my next question is which brands would YOU choose if you could get eny brand endoorsment you want?:lol:

Just finished replacing all of my B-8 Sabians. But still stuck with Sabian. Just moved up to an all Paragon set of cymbals. This whole change started 'cause I bought a Paragon Ride. At that point, none of the B-8's matched anymore. Just picked up the last 2 I needed, The 8 and 10 inch splashes.

When Sabian first started out in the early '80's, Zildian was pretty much putting out crap. I think the competition from another big North American cymbal maker has been good for everybody, especially us consumers. I've owned a number of Sabians over the years and have been happy with all of them. currently I've got a 21" hand hammered Traditional series ride that's seeing a lot of use. It's very controlled and sticky sounding, opens to a nice crash and has an awesome bell... in other words, a cymbal that fits my needs to a tee.

and k7moto!:thu:like how you think! STP ftw!

Carmine didn't even respond to my trivia question?...

From what I read so far,any cymbal maker can make a good or great cymbal, regardless of name.

I have been loyal to Sabian since my dad bought me my first when I was 16 but I would like to add that they need to step up their warranty program because they are expensive and like any cymbal, they break and I hate replacing cymbals! I go through like 3 per year and at $200+ bucks each I'm going bankrupt. You have to be famous to get any kind of decent endorsement and even though my band is on the verge of a deal and we are currently being played on the radio nationwide, I can't get any respect from those guys. I can imagine that once we do get signed and the companies start coming around with their offers for endorsements I will probably tell Sabian to go take a flying leap. The only company that will even consider talking to me right now is Meinl and that's what I will ultimately end up playing I'm sure. I would probably be playing them now if distribution of their product wasn't so poor.. :blah:
