Members Andy315
So I'm playing a 24" SJC maple kick right now and I've been using the kit mostly for rock but have recently switched back to playing heavier music....metal in particular. I've got a Gretsch renown kit that I'm getting in like a week or two with a 22" kick. I've noticed even with the head tuned up on the 24" that it's still a little floppy and I remember 22" kicks always being pretty tight and responsive. Basically when I play on the 22" kicks at work I can play faster and more accurate than I can on my 24" kick....anyone else notice anything similar to that? Members theDan
Yeah, it's cause there's less slack in a smaller diameter head, simply due to the fact that it's smaller. 18" get some awesome response.
Members nklarow
I've never played a 24" kick, so this post probably won't help you at all, but I must say, my dream kit always included a 24" x 18" kick. Drum candy.
Members cft
I've had 20''to 24'' kicks and believe me I was a die hard 24'' guy until the last couple of years. I now know why 22'' are so popular not to big not to small but just right. I like 22''s because you get the bottom end that a 20 cant get but you get the response and tightness that a 24'' cant get. Members Walt Disney
Yep, a 24" is less controllable. I got use to it but still the 22 is more responsive and plays more comfortable. Another difference though is volume. Compared to my 22" the 24 is a canon, which is great for non-amplified gigs. I'm looking out for a 26" though, so i regret reading this thread already. Members ThePloughman
When you get into those bigger sizes........you might find its a good idea to stay with a more traditional depth. 14x24 is great. 14x26 is great. I see guys posting on bd sizes of 20x24, 20x26 and I have to wonder, ..... how do you mover that much air, get any response, and not feel like you are mashing potatoes? Members theDan
Yeah, my bass drum is a 20x22 and you have to hit it hard to get a good boom out of it. But that boom it achieves is gnarly.
Members 1001gear
I used to have a Bonham kit, 14, 16, 18 , 26. the 26 is roodiculous. 22 is about as punchy as you can get.

A drummer of a band we play with a lot has a Ludwig kit with "Bonham" sizes... I don't know really how he does it but he's constantly breaking the batter head of that drum. He's done it a few times... and at the last show he had to swap it out for another drummer's 18" kick drum. "My bass drum was pregnant... and look! It had a baby!"
