Members Merlin Coryell
I am looking for a cheap but reliable double pedal for use on an ekit. Nothing fancy, just something that can stand up after a while. I have been looking into the newer Pulse's and the VEX pedals. I also looked at the Union Pros at Cascio. If anyone can tell me anything good or bad about any of the pedals, or any others to look into that are $140 or less, it would be appreciated. PLEASE, only comment if you have experience with the pedals, I just need to know if people have used them and what they thought. Thanks.
Members D Carroll
i used to have a pulse pro... before they up-dated it... it was a decent pedal, on the neg. side, it would break all the time, but i think they fixed that flaw... Members Carminemw
The Pulse played OK and was real sturdy. Also look into the PDP 602C...got good reviews...
Members RumStik
Like I already mentioned, in the $100 range, the Vex, IMO, is the best value. I have one and can attest to its quality first hand. There are others who've had 'em that would tell you different. Anyway, other than that, it can be hard to keep it under $160. These are all viable in that bracket... http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibraltar-Prowler-Double-Pedal?sku=490043 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Pearl-P122TW-Double-Pedal?sku=448787 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibraltar-Avenger-II-Double-Pedal?sku=490046 http://www.wwbw.com/Taye-Drums-PSK602C-Double-Bass-Drum-Pedal-i161438.music
Members zarazabas
Gibraltar have some pretty cheap pedals don't they? Never used any of them but perhaps that's another brand you could look at. Going second hand could also be a good option. A little above your budget - $150http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibraltar-Prowler-Double-Pedal?sku=490043 edit: ahhhh..... i see RumStik beat me to that link. Damn you RumStik!!! Members Merlin Coryell
The Gibraltar Prowlers are not worth a thing. Certainly dont have the features like the Vex and Pulse. Both of the double chain pedals listed above by Rumstick are too expensive. The Vex is $99, and with my coupon, the Pulse would be not much more. Rum, do tell me more about the Vex, it is the frontrunner right now and looks just as solid as my Intruder II.
Members BenG
PDP is the way to go with good cheap pedals.
Members theDan
I had the cheapest PDP double pedal, it rusted within 6 months and it never left the garage, practically no adjustment not even beater distance to head. Not worth it IMO. Those VEX's look durable enough though.
Members zarazabas
FWIW, i have and use the Pearl P122TW Double Pedal linked to by RumStik, and, although it's the only double pedal i've ever used (so therefore have little basis for comparison), i have had no problems at all with it and am perfectly satisfied with its function. Members Merlin Coryell
I would prefer a double chain so that it will take a beating in the long run. It will be used on my dads ekit, so it wont need to set any blastbeat records. I just need a good, strong pedal. Dual chain, dual plate and easy to care for are what I require. Members Merlin Coryell
Hey Rum, can that Vex be converted into singles if needed? Looks like it has everything, but why does it show two springs for the left side?
Members RumStik
I got the Vex about 14 months ago...did some initial adjustment experiments, found settings I liked, and haven't had to mess with it since. I'm no seasoned double basser, but as I understand it, the slave mechanism incorporates two springs, (one on each unit), to compensate for the sloppy rebound some doubles exhibit, and it seems to work. It can be adjusted so the slave side rebounds exactly like the master, (though my personal tension settings aren't quite equal side to side). As far as I can tell, with "normal" use, you shouldn't see any durability problems. Though I haven't done it myself, I see no mechanical reason why they couldn't be converted to two singles, though it certainly isn't an "advertised feature." Members Merlin Coryell
Cool, probably wont ever need to be converted anyway. I just wanted to make sure that the extra spring didnt make the second pedal "heavier" by default. Good to know it doesnt. Its probably going to be my choice. Members SirPsychoBuddha
Random question here merlin, what ekit are you using. Just wondering.
Members godofmetalguita
i have a vex and it is a good cheap pedal for sure, it replaced my pacific double pedal that was flimsy and didnt seem like it would hold up. i did break a spring and some of the parts could use some work (the adjustable springs get loose easily even after tightening with a wrench). Overall it's the best buy for the money, It can be converted if need be to 2 singles. The biggest problem i found is that the left pedal slides a lot. it doesnt have velcro or and spikes to hold it in place. It isnt as nice as say a dw5000 or a pearl eliminator, or an iron cobra, but it is the best cheap pedal by far that i've had experience with.
