Just relax your hands. it sounds like you're tensing up. I play in a fast band, and what i do to help a lot is stick control exercises. Perhaps pick up a stick control book or video. It will teach you to start using more of your fingers rather than your hand.

Hope this helps some.

I'd bet money that your grip is off. A few months ago I was getting horrible hand cramps (like what you're describing) whenever I'd play anything. It wouldn't matter if I was just sitting down for a few minutes behind the kit - I'd end up with my hands hurting enough to not only make me stop playing, but to go get the heating pad and wrap my hands with it.

Between help from the guys here and my drum teacher, I realized that I was just gripping the stick way too tight. I adjusted my technique ever so slightly - I just loosened my hands a little bit - and the cramps were gone.

I strongly suggest that you take a look at your hand technique. That's usually what causes problems like this.

Good luck. :thu:
