Allow myself to introduce... myself!

I've been lurking for a while now (read: years), and finally decided to register and post. Thanks to Carmine noticing me in the funny faces thread, I figured I should take a moment to introduce myself. So, please allow me to introduce myself, even though I'm neither a man of wealth nor taste.

First off, I'm 30 and from the great state of New Jersey. I started playing drums in 1986 when I got my first snare drum through my school's music lessons program in the 4th grade. Although a case could be made for me having started drums/percussion a few years earlier in kindergarten because when we'd have music class, we'd get to play instruments, and I always picked the tiny gong.

Back to that snare drum... I think it's still at my parents house. I still use the hardshell case to this day with my current drums. It's held up really well for over 20 years of use!

When I got to middle school in 1988, I joined the middle school band, and played drums and percussion there too. I preferred it when we'd get our music on full sheets of paper because the half sheets were easy to lose, especially for a kid in middle school!

1989 rolled around, and that's when I got my first kit, which is a Ludwig, I believe from the 70s, but I'm not too sure about that. The only way I can describe the drums is that they had a black oyster-like color to them, except the colors were green and black. That kit is at my parents house, until I get enough motivation and inspiration to go searching for parts. My dad got me that kit used from a guy selling it, and it came with Paiste Color Sound hi-hats (black) and crashes (2 16" red ones) and some ride that I can't remember the make. That kit came with 2 Yamaha stands, 1 Pearl stand, and a Tama hi-hat stand. I still use the Yamaha and Pearl stands to this day. It also had a Ludwig Speed King, but that's long gone, as I gave it to a fellow drummer who needed a bass drum pedal.

I ended up playing in a couple bands in high school, then I went off to college. When I was a senior in college, I got into another band (well, the guitarist and I had been jamming together for a couple years with other various musicians, but nothing ever really took hold until we said {censored} it and found some people willing to support us as a singer and bassist) and started gigging. That band ended up dissolving the following year, but it's still a fond memory. I'm currently playing drums and bass in a band right now (not at the same time, another guy and I switch off instruments).

My current kit is a 2001 Tama Rockstar, 6 pieces if I'm going to set it up somewhere that it'll be for a while, otherwise 4 or 5 pieces if I know I'm going to be breaking it down shortly after playing (like at a gig). I have a drawing of it somewhere that I did in Canvas. If I find it, I'll post it up.

Favorite drummers: Taylor Hawkins, Dave Grohl, Matt Sorum (funny faces and all), Stewart Copeland, Lars Ulrich, Joey Kramer, and probably a million others that I can't think of right now.

I find that as I get older and play more with a wide variety of people, I tend to become more about the whole song than about just the drums.

This post was longer than I had intended... going down memory lane about that Ludwig kit was a trip!
