Is $225.00 a fair price for a used Sabian Hand Hammered 20" Medium ride cymbal?

There's a pawnshop here in Atlantic Canada that has one of these for sale and I was thinking that it might be a good cymbal for my son's kit but I'm not sure about the price.

Also, is it kind of risky buying used cymbals if you don't know what to watch out for?

Last Christmas, my wife paid $215 for an 18" HH Crash/Ride for me NEW. It was $185 on the internet and with shipping it would have been about the same. Used Cymbals and name brand drums lose at least a third to a half of their value once they leave the store new.

Also you will see manufacter's suggested retail price in the catalog and according to Sabian. MSRP for short. NEVER pay that price! It is always highly inflated! Other cymbal makers and drum brands do it too. I bet MSRP on that cymbal and my cymbal is in the mid-300's. It's done that so it sounds really good to you when the music store takes $100 off for a new cymbal that cost the music store $100 to get and Sabian $50 to make. This must be what the pawn shop is basing their price on or they are just looking for the first sucker.

Biggest thing is to read up all the info you can on the web and elsewhere. Go to Sabian.com and look up the cymbal to have a reference point or base, then check out the links and follow those and you will see how much new go for on line and then start looking at used Educate yourself about cymbals just like looking for cars.

The biggest risks in buying used is if you buy without test driving first, that's why is best to play before you buy. Even two same HH rides can sound a little different than the other one. It might be okay if you play a cymbal at a store and then see the same cymbal on line used, you know what to exspect. Of course can always ask us our thoughts like you already have.

When you look at a cymbal, check for cracks along the edges and radiating from the center hole, big chucks missing, I have one cymbal that has a tiny "nick" on the edge and still plays fine. Lay it on a flat surface (ie. A glass counter top) and should lay even all the way around. Also look at centerhole and should be perfectly round. Some people let the center hole rub against the cymbal stand peg and nut and it wallows out the center hole causing it to look more the old time door key holes or "Keyholing"

But $225 for USED Sabian HH? Naw now if it was more like $150 or under it might be worth it. If you look on line, NEVER EVER buy from a guy named DDrumBum or PDP Player out of Washington state. He makes a habit of cutting down cymbals that were cracked on the edge and never states they were cut!

Sorry so long and hope this helps............:)

On any used cymbal look closely at the mounting hole...If there's going to be an issue that's were it will start. It should be PERFECT or pass on the cymbal. Second is just overall condition...

For price... You should be able to get any cymbal NEW for 50% off list. I walk in to Guitar Center and get them for that... And that's not a "deal", but sometimes I just hear one I like and buy it.

There are online sources where the price will be less that 50% of suggested Retail... You are aware of MAP right? Minimum Advertised price? I have a couple of favorite online dealers that beat MAP, you could try for that cymbal:

New and maybe they'd have a used one :

www.dalesdrumshop.com - I like a "Jim" there.

or for New:

www.massmusic.com - I deal with Russ

Good hunting!

Money talks, bull{censored} walks.

Bust on up in there, and smack some crisp bills on the counter. Not $225 worth, but something more along the lines of $180ish. If the thing has been sitting for a while, they shouldn't mind getting it moved out the door. It's a pawn shop for crimmeny sakes, HAGGLE!

I had a guy in a pawn shop trying to sell me a snare stand made from 2 or 3 stands for $75.00!!

When I told him it was way too much he said talk to the owner, he'll negotiate with most people. I just left. I would have maybe giving him $25.00 for it and I didn't want to waist anymore of my time.

But it also made me wonder how much he paid for the stand in pawn. There's allot of pretty dumb people out there when it comes to musical instruments, especially drums!!
