Rush vs Genesis

I'm not an authority on either but I prefer Genesis. Marko 46 suggested I really give Moving Pictures a chance so I put it in the drive and let it run in the background. Note that all previous attempts to "listen" to it ended after a few bars of Tom Sawyer.

So you know what Marko? I kinda like Lifeson. I admit I'm somewhat of a tone slut but still that's the life so to speak of the band. I'd much prefer Gabriel and Collins in the other spots. Lee can stay on bass.

Also some of the riffs make good preparatory exercises.

I saw Rush live the other day and it was unbelievable. I expected Geddy's voice to be trashed after all of these years but he hit everything, even the high notes. Of course, the instrumentation was God-like. A show I will never forget. :)

I hate you 1001gear, another vs. thread, you are horrible.

Anyway, I love Rush, but I f@*$! hate 90% of the fanbase. I cant see them live anymore due to the 1000 drunks trying their hardest and loudest to match Geddy's pitch next to me. I dont get lame ass people who go to shows to get piss drunk and try to out-shout the amps. I want to take an ASP and crush their skulls in so damn much.

On another subject, Genesis is fine, but Gabriel has to be tied with Gilmour, Bowie and Mercury for people I cant choose between for best rock voice ever.

Ah, Merlin's always so full of sunshine.

I have to say, I absolutely love the musical talent of Rush, but I can't stand Geddy Lee's voice for more than about 12 seconds. In all the years I've been trying, I've never been able to get into them for that reason. I'll listen just for the educational value, but I just can't love it. Gimme YYZ and I'm good.

I must vote for Genesis. My favorite band.

BUT, Rush and Neil Peart helped get me started in drumsRush is totally awesome. I love all the late 70's early 80's stuff. And I must admit, Rush is still kicking ass today, where the stuff I've seen and heard from Genesis' latest tour was a let down. Phil has lost so much of his hearing and vocal range and they have slowed so many of the songs down in tempo that it doesn't sound right. I'm glad I saw them in 92' when they were on fire.

I never really thought about Geddy Lee's voice being too high until recently. That was just Rush. My biggest thing with Rush was how all the songs started sounding alike after awhile. Power Windows and Grace Under Pressure just burnt me out a little. So technical and not enough groove. But Peart is STILL a god!

I love most things Genesis, Gaberiel as lead AND Phil as lead. Yeah some it got to be too much pop. But there was also Abacab, Follow You-Follow Me, That's All, Misunderstanding, Mama, No Son of Mine.

Genesis is like the TV show MASH. the members might change and some of it's dumb, but it draws you back each and every time. Songs you've heard times before can sound different if you hear right.

Older Genesis does take a little bit to get used to. It becomes an aquired taste, but then it's hard to get those tunes out of your head. Genesis first album came out around the same time as Led Zep's first but the name of their first was called "From Genesis to Reverlation" and many record stores thought it was an religous album. Up until 1975, Genesis was still an "underground" band.

Firth of a Fifth, Suppers Ready, The Musical Box, Los Endos really showcase Phil Collins the drummer.

Also look how Peter Gaberiel has gone on to solo success, along with Phil, Mike Rutherford of Mike and the Mechanics, Steve Hackett with GTR and his solo work, Tony Banks-classically trained pianist and scored many films and worked with others, even Chester Thompson (Genesis touring drummer during the big time and latest tour) was a former Zappa drummer.

While Lifeson and Lee are super talented, Most people see Rush as that trio with the awesome drummer. Whereas Genesis is more well rounded with talented performers and songs in my humble ass opinion only.

Rush is totally great and they were a big influnence. But Genesis just seemed to have the total package to me. Just had more range to me, players, writers, singers, difference between albums and songs. sorry so long and this is just my thoughts...

1001, are you sure it was me, marko46, or just marko, 'cause I have no recollection of suggesting Moving Pictures? If I did, I had taken extra meds for stress- which maybe the case. I'll take Rush though, just not Moving Pictures- earlier Rush is more my liking. But that's also the case with Genesis, "When the Lamb Lies Down" w/ Gabriel was way cooler then the commercial stuff later in the 80's w/ Collins singing lead.

Pink Floyd, now thats another deal altogether. It's all good.:thu:

Yeah it was in regard to Tom Sawyer which I hated and just couldn't get started on. Peart vs Bonham I think, where the high court ruled yada yada ...

Just saw Roger Waters in concert a few weeks ago in Denver. It was basically a Pink Floyd show without the lasers, but the flying pig did make an appearance.

Great show...

Here's a link to a stream from an audience recording. Not the best quality, but it's still pretty good.

There are a couple of Rush tunes that I like.

There are no tunes by any combination of Peter Gabriel/Phil Collins/Genesis that I like.

You gotta be kidding. You're saying that in all the albums that those two made solo, and all the albums that Genesis made, you can't find a single song that you like?

You don't like ANY of:

In The Air Tonight

Ssudio

That's All

Red Rain

Sledgehammer

Biko

Games Without Frontiers

Take Me Home

In Too Deep

Land of Confusion

Invisible Touch

No Son of Mine

Tonight Tonight Tonight

Follow You Follow Me

Against All Odds

I Don't Remember

Big Time

...or even SHOCK THE MONKEY?????

Simply amazing.

No, I'm saying that of all of the music made by Peter Gabriel/Phil Collins/Genesis THAT I'VE HEARD (which, admittedly, really isn't that much), I don't like any of it. Not one single tune. Some of the ones on your list I find particularly objectionable (like the first two). But I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't care for any of their tunes that I haven't heard, either. It's just not what I like.

But that's not to say that they aren't good musicians. If they hit the notes they want to hit and hold them for as long as they want to hold them, then they're good musicians. It's just that I don't care for the results.
