I've never used microphones on my drum kit; what are the minimum equipment requirements to get started ?

That's such a wide question...may I suggest checking our archives, we've answered this question many times. But first and foremost, you need to focus more on what you're trying to do...are you in a band, do you want to record, are you doing this for a living...way too many directions. There are basic mics, professional grades, studio and live performance mics, boards, eqs, effects...lots of stuff to consider. Check out our answers first to help you focus...:thu:

This has been talked about a lot, if you use search theres all kind of info to read through. But my brief opinion on minimum equipment for recording would be, a computer, an interface like M-audio fast track ultra, 2 condenser mics for overheads, 1 dynamic for kick drums, 1 dynamic for snare. For live gigs just buy a full set of drum mics and be done with it...

For live sound:

1 Audix D6

1 Audio-Technica ATM650

For studio:

1 Audix D6

1 Audio-Technica ATM650

2 Audio-Technica AE5100 (or whatever pair of condensors you can get your hands on, these are my favs right now)

OR

1 mic of any kind. Put it a few feet in front of the kit and point it at the drums. Bingo, sound.
