Members MacBradley
I've played guitar for about 9 years, and I've played keys for about 2, and I want to start playing drums, so I want to buy a drum set. I figured asking at GC would yield me getting misinformed to know end (if their drum guys are even half as misinforming than the guitar staff). I'm wanting to keep things to $500, maybe $600, but I don't know where that's gonna get me. I don't want a total POS that will go out of tune and sound like crap. Any advice on good kits, what to expect form the price, whether used is a good idea? Thanks guys!
Members willhaven
$600 for the whole kit? Definitely go used. You'll get more for your money that way.

Members MacBradley
Okay, so the most common used kit I see popping up used around my price range is the Pearl Export 5 piece. Any word on these both sonically and durability? They seem to be the beyond begginer-but-not-pro quality kit, is that right or are they just crappy drums that are over-priced, or a good for the money kind of thing? Mapex M series drums go between about $850-1150 new, which would be doable in used price range for me. Reviews seem to say these kits are good quality for what you pay, any one hear anything about these or heard them? As far as cymbals I don't need any more than a hat, crash, and ride. Remember I don't even play drums.

That is the kit I always recommend to people looking for what you're looking for. You can make them sound great if you put good heads on there and tune them well. I've recorded with Exports and you can get a nice sound out of them. "Beyond-beginner-but-not-pro" is exactly what they are. Make sure you get a good price on the drums so you can get decent cymbals. Cheap cymbals sound crappy. Those exports will sound fine with good cymbals and tuning.

I also want to buy a drum set and I am not sure how much money i need to spend on cymbals. for the beginners, is zildjian xbt set decent enough? in my budget $1000, i was not sure how much amount that i need to spend on cymbals. It's hard to get used one, so i am also considering new set too; and then the reasonable price set for cymbals(ZILDJIAN XBT 4set) was $300 +-. Am i doing right? Members marko46
Here's just a couple. First one appears to be a pretty damn good deal actually, but it is more then what you indicated you wanted to spend. But, {censored}, pretty much everthings there plus a rack, cases and aux. percussion. No pic's though. http://columbus.craigslist.org/msg/773529641.html This one looks pretty good too and is below your price range. No cymbals though. But I think a decent kit for 400.00. http://columbus.craigslist.org/msg/748240500.html Search craigs list man. There are deals to be had for sure. Members dajini
Decent means pretty much anything that's not... ZBT, ZXT, ZHT, Planet Z... B8... PST3, PST5... These are the beginner lines from Zildjian, Sabian, and Paiste, all listed respectively. These are the 3 main cymbal companies, there's other ones like Meinl that have some really {censored}ty beginner stuff but I don't know what Meinl's beginner line is called. Now there probably are other {censored}ty beginner cymbals that I didn't just say, so you should probably check with us before you buy any cymbals, just to make sure you're not getting ripped off. Members boxofrocks
$600 will get you a damn good used shell pack, may even get some good cymbals with it. Don't buy the cheapest kit cause you're not a drummer yet, if you dig playing you'll be upgrading within a year and it's a waste of money, and don't buy the best kit yet, cause you really don't NEED it. get a mid level kit, that will do you from beginner on up to intermediate level, something good for gigging out. I suggest Yamaha stage custom, tour custom with good heads, not stock.
