Members cjmst3k
Anyone know the practical sound difference between Signature Full crashes, and Dark Energy crashes? I've been working my way around my kit to go all Signature Full crashes... and just swapped out my cracked 19" zildjian dark crash for a 19" Signature Full crash. Unfortunately, the sound from the 19" Signature Full is too similar to my 18" Signature Full which is next to it. Paiste's website sounded like more different between the two, and I bought online based on that. I'm thinking I should either go 20" Signature Full, or consider a Dark Energy, but I don't know anything about the DE's. Who here has, or has tried out both Sig Full and Dark Energy crashes side by side? I'm interested to know your descriptions of the two!

I think they would compliment your setup, for sure.
Members nickg
Unfortunately, the sound from the 19" Signature Full is too similar to my 18" Signature Full which is next to it. that's why i like a 2" difference from cymbal size to cymbal size in the same line. i have 3 18" crashes but they are all from different series-Signature, 2002, Rude, so there is a sound difference. but say i had 3 crashes in the Sig line i'd go from 16" to 18" to 20" instead of 16, 17, 18 or 17, 18, 19, etc.
Members LowPhreak
Size for size - DE crashes weigh the same as the Sig Fulls. Yes, I actually weigh my Pies, because it gives me a better idea of why they sound and play like they do compared to others. Main diff to my ears is the Fulls have a bit stronger upper midrange/highs on the attack and are warm and smooth through their decay, though DE's still have a good initial bite. The DE's body seems to have a wider mix of frequencies than the Fulls with almost a low-end "growl" through their decay. Size for size, DE's sustain just a tad longer than Fulls. I've owned all sizes of Sig Fulls except 14" & 19", have played DE 16" & 18" a fair amount, and currently own a DE 19".
