Members Carminemw
Aesthetic unless the drum is so shallow that they've been offset to accomodate the lug and casing...
Members Thingfish
If you understand different vibrational modes of a column of air, you can make a case of offset lugs can be mathematically placed at the nodal lines to highlight specific modes, while killing undesirable modes. However, if you don't know which pitches are specific to the modes that a drum is designed for, then this won't help you much. Also, once a microphone is used, then the compression, limiter, gate, eq and mic headroom have more effect on the sound than overtones in the drum. In most cases, it is aesthetic, because most builders don't have time to figure out the math behind nodal lines, because math is hard. As an interesting aside, Yamaha owns the patent on placing the tom mounts on nodal lines to diminish the possibility of getting cross-talk of modes between drums. http://www.google.com/patents?vid=USPAT5329838
