Remo Emperor or Ambassador for Bass Drum Batter?

Long story - but a buddy of mine is having a special run of RED Remo heads made - and since I'm building a red drum kit I'm going to get a complete set.

They're only making Emperor and Ambassador heads, so for the toms I'm putting Emperor on the batter and Ambassador on the resonant, but now we come to the bass drum...

I'm going to have a custom head on the front/resonant of the bass - but I'm scratching my chin about using a red head on the bass drum batter.

Watchoo guys think? Can't say I've ever heard of an Emporer or Ambassador used as bass drum batter - but they do make'em that size...

TIA!!! :thu:

But RED? I'd have to see it to like it, I guess...

Basically the same look as the Evans heads that were available in red back in the early/mid 80s.

Here's a couple low-res crappy pics, just so you can get an idea of the shade we're talking about.

Are these commercially available?

I wouldn't mind putting a set of those on one of my kits.

No, not really...

I'm playing around with the process (and want to highlight them on a kit) - and then will see if it's commercially viable.

I will say... that you can buy regular heads for about $1/inch - and these are running me about $4/inch. So the price of the process has to come down A LOT for this to be an option for most people.

Thanks for asking though! :)

I used to use Remo heads on my 24" kicks back in the day before EMADs and Superkicks, but I can't recall if Ambassador or Emperor.

I had a Fire Engine Red Tama kit and it looked great with ebony heads. I think these red heads would look great on a black kit. Not so sure about red on red, but looking forward to full kit pic once you've got them done.

I have a 24" 6 ply maple kick and a 26" 3 ply maple (Ludwig's both) and the emporer heads sound fantastic on both of them. I just use a felt strip on the batter head, and NO PILLOW or any other muffling. Lots of deep tone and boom. Not much over ring either. Plus they last a hell of a lot longer than ambassadors for the kick. (either way, don't dare use either without a pad on the kick head for extra durability. Not like you can just waltz down to your neighborhood mom and pop store to get more if you prematurely wear them out)
