I'm not a drummer, but need help with a bass drum

So I'm using a bass drum while playing acoustic guitar (one man band type deal?) and my drum is pretty crappy. Now, I can't really afford to pay 300 bucks for a new one, and don't want a cheap whole set. I've stuffed sweatshirts in it, but too many makes it too soft and too little makes it too loud/trebley. It is a piece of crap drum, there aren't "heads" more like sheets of plastic and the kick is pretty unreliable and unstable. Regardless, I'm more worried about fixing the sound. can I maybe wrap some rubber bands around the kick (it's this wierd material like cotton brillo pad)? will that make it any better? I was thinking a washcloth where the kick hits. Any suggestions will be good. I'm looking for a quick bass thump, not a marching band drum. lol.

Get a Superkick 2 batter with a Regulator front (Aquarian brand heads) No extra muffling, will last for years (with the way you are using it) and sounds deep full and punchy. Go with a Superkick 1 if you want a little higher/open of a sound.

Yeah! That sounds like fun! I've heard a couple of solo acousic acts doing that and they all seemed like they were really having fun!

On the bass..sorry but if it sounds like crap even after muffling the inside,it may be either the quality of the drum or the quality of the head. From what it sounds like you are doing, you need sort of a muffled oompf, solid, quick, yet with at least a little tone.

Take everything out of the drum..Does it ring when you play it? How long does it ring? Will a little foam on the bottom 3 to 4 inches still provide some tone even though it is muffled? If the drum doesn't ring at all. make sure you have fairly decent heads on both sides (Remo is a name you can trust) but don't fool with any expensive heads (EMAD,,etc.). If the drum itself is a no name (you can tell quality by the number and kind of plies, the thin layers of wood that make the shell). Check online for a cheap, old bass shell and use the same hardware as on your current drum.

Make sure your pedal is decent. You can pick up name brand pedals on Ebay for 20-40 bucks. (don't bother even looking at the expensive stuff, you don't need it). Old is okay!

Have fun experimenting and don't spend more than $75! That would be if you replaced everything!

Really???? I want "This" but don't want to spend any money on it?

You get what you pay for in life. {censored}ty Kick Drum... {censored}ty Heads... {censored}ty Player (Guitar Player Ta-boot).... {censored}ty End Results.

Give it to a drummer to assess and if it's worth a hill of beans, have him tune it up for you and take his advice of how to play it, what mallet to use, which heads, etc...

Guitar players should be given an IQ test to determine if they're aloud to live
