Remo vs. Evans heads

When i first started messing around with different head brands i used remos, and they didn't really sound good to me but i'm starting to think now that it was because i used to not be able to tune very well. After a while of using remos i swapped to evans heads and was happy (once again i think i started to get better at tuning, particularly because when i swapped to evans i started using double ply heads which made it easier to tune.) Now after a while i'm thinking of giving remos a go again.

Which remos would you recommend for snare and toms?? at the moment i'm using evans g1 coated on toms and snare.

drumheads are subjective just like everything else we use. everyone has their favorites. just like me....i've been using ATTACK heads exclusively since 1992 and haven't used Remo since even before that. at the time i found their quality lacking, but no doubt they've improved just like everyone has improved their products over the years.

experiment with different heads and find what sounds and works FOR YOU. my choice may be totally opposite of what you're looking for.

really there's NO right or wrong head, stick, cymbal, drum as a general rule, though these things are many times based on your style of playing, the type of music you play, etc., as well.

sometimes we drummers are overwhelmed with options, but in the same respect that's a good thing because it give you the option to find YOUR sound.

I cycle through the big three damn near monthly. I hear something I don't like, go to my closet and pull out some lightly used heads and try them - I'm happy for a while, then swap them out again.

Aquarian, I like the hoops and the rollever deal with the heads, but so far I;ve had a couple of heads have some issues out of the box. Love their coatings. I hate their bass drum heads. They also seem to wear unevenly, or they just wear out, I haven't figured that out just yet...also no local availability =/

Remo I like the attack and durability, but the coatings flake off for me, so I tend to use clear heads, which are too bright/ringy, even with emperor/ambassador. Need to revisit pinstripes. They're a bit more consistent than Evans, that I've noticed. For me, the PS3 is the only head worthwhile on the bass drum. PS3 was OK on snare. Both are a secondary choice though...

Evans I like the feel, but they cost more, and they tend to not make their hoops all that well, leading to a bubble near the seam when tuning them up. Wish they'd loose the damn frosting...

Right now I have Evans on my bass drum, having tried everything else it's what I like most.

I have Aquarian Texture-Coated Response II / Classic Clear, snare is a Focus-X w/ Dot over Classic-Clear Snare-side

I sat on the floor in front of a rack of Remo heads the other day, I pulled them out one at a time and gave each one a scratch with my thumb nail, (where noone would nitice) 3 out of 5 the coating scratched off with one scrape of my nail, the ones that didn't come off, never did after a dozen scrapes. So I'm staying with Evans until they fix the inconsistency o the coating on Remo. I saw it with m own 4 eyes.

I remember having Remo heads ony my snare (Ambassador, if I remember correctly) where the coating wouldn't flake off, but man, that was almost 20 years ago.

I'm starting to think this flaking Remo coating might be the drummers Sasquatch.

EDIT: Alright, i just scraped it with my nail, nothing. I scraped it with my {censored}ing pocket knife and nothing happened either.

I promise man, I sat on the floor and took them out of the packs one by one and scraped with my thumb nail and 3 out of five I scratched the coating off, then I would hit one that wouldn't come off for nothing.

Never had premature flaking of Remo's coating in
decades
of using them. Not once. Ever. Somehow I got all the good ones.

To the OP, no one can recommend a head for you without knowing what kind of music you play and what kind of sound you're going for.

Do you want me to take pictures next time?

I believe everyone who says their Remo coatings flake off. What I don't believe is that it's an intrinsic quality of Remo coatings per se, and I see no reason to encourage such thought and thereby discourage anyone from trying them.

Some drummers: Remo coating always flakes off in 15 minutes.

Other drummers: Remo coatings never flake off prematurely.

Draw yer own conclusions.

Sorry, I guess I misinterpreted the rolleyes thing as you didn't believe those that have come across the issue. I guess I'm in a pissy mood lately which doesn't help...

No offense intended...

Pinstripes are excellent for fat tom tones, Ambassadors are the industry standard, and Emperors are more durable but still retain a nice open quality.

I just replaced my tom heads with coated PS3's, and although its a bit different from the norm, I like it. Single-ply tone with double-ply focus. the coating is indeed coming off quick, but it doesn't alter the sound much, so I don't mind.

Take your pick.
