Members captainobvious
The kick drum on this kit is just . He had it set up with an EMAD beater head and it was just deep and thunderous. The toms overall were pretty nice as well, although I wouldn't say they were *significantly* better than my Tama superstar custom birch's. Overall though, thats a really sweet kit. That kick drum...ahh...just sweetness. On another note... I put some Evans Onyx heads on my toms a week ago and they made a pretty big difference. Less ring and a much more focused sound. Definitely digging the Onyx heads I think I'll try the EMAD on my kick drum since its still the stock beater and see where that goes. Any recommendations for a reso head for the kick? Is it going to make as big of a difference as an upgraded beater ?
Members SudzDrummer
Hey cptn. How big was the renown kick? It's pretty sweet that when you order a renown kit they come with an emad batter head and G2s on the toms... at least mine did anyways! Glad you liked the kit As for a reso head on your kick... I switch between a ported emad and the stock gretsch head depending on the application. I can honestly say that the only difference I hear is due to the hole in the emad and the fact that it allows mics to get closer to the batter head. If you want a focused kick sound I'd suggest getting a ported emad or ps3. If you want lots of rumble and sustain I'd opt for any single or double ply un-ported head. Members captainobvious
I'm pretty sure it was the 22x18 kick. Can't wait to do a little tweaking to mine now as I'm sure it will sound pretty sick.
Members k7mto
You can get a nice deep punch out of your birch kick with an EMAD. I've got one on my Tama SCP (birch) kick and it sounds great.
Members qwertyMan
That's funny. I have that kit, but now that I'm getting more into jazz, I'm looking for an 18" to get as well. I don't even care if it matches. I've actually had trouble with my 22x18. The tone is nice, but there's some weird thing going on with the rebound... I play a lot of really quick doubles with my right foot (single pedal) and the feel of the head is getting annoying.
Members e-b-e
I think the Renown Maple kits are one of the best kits produced overseas. Great workmanship and great sound.
Members JBrig
As far as Kick reso's are concerned, I use an Emad 2 ply for the Batter and the reso is a Aquarian regulator. My experience with the Emad reso sucks. Its too thin and worse of all the dampening rings for the port spit apart almost instantly. The batter Emad 2 is killer though! I use Evans on everything else.
