Members onehandclapping
Hey, I recently got a great deal on a 1970's Slingerland chrome-over-brass snare. The shell is in amazing shape, but the heads are a bit old and the snares are missing a few wires. It already sounds great, but I plan on giving it some TLC this month and would like some advice... My questions:1) What snare wires would you recommend for this drum? I've never bought new snares before, but have read good things on this forum about PureSound. Is there a model of their wires that would be comparable to what was originally on this drum? I'm not looking to add collector's value to this snare, just looking for good, affordable snares. 2) The rims are Ludwig, and I'm casually keeping track of Sticksaver hoops on eBay. Did the 70's COB snares also have COB rims? Is there a huge difference between the brass and steel hoops? Thanks!
Members nsnyder6
I have steel rims and I like them pretty well. I heard some bad things about sticksavers hoops, mainly quality. And I have never bought snares so I can't help you there.
Members faileddrummer
Snares are snares, imo. The only real difference is how many wires you have.

Members Teegardendrums
Well I have a great Slingerland snare from 1969 and It's just about all original and the sticksaver rims have been on it ever since but since you don't have those and if you got 100$ ,I would buy die-cast rims if you want it to look original and make it sound even better...Matt
Members Teegardendrums
That throwoff doesn't look original is it?
Members Teegardendrums
I use a Gibraltar 20 strand snare and it is just fine and it's sensitive too
