Wuhan and Saluda Cymbals?

Hey guys. I usually hang out around the For Sale forum and the guitar forums, so this is a question coming out of left field. I have a rockstar custom kit from around year 2000. my cousin out in long island has been playing on a cheap ol' vintage kit from the 70's and I thought this would make a great gift for him given I have no space in my NYC apartment for them. I have the 22" bass drum, 10,12, and 14" toms and a 15" snare along with all the hardware. I am looking to get him a decent set of cymbals but am looking to save a bit of money. I remember a lot of hype about Wuhan and Saluda cymbals back when they were listed on Ebay. I have found a handful of places online that sell these cymbals. The prices seem very fair compared to the competitors.

My question is about the quality and sound. How do these compared to Zildjian & Sabian? What model are they comparable too if any?

Any advice or experiences with Wuhan and/or Saluda would be greatly appreciated. I am looking for a basic set, 20" ride, 16" crash, 14" hi hats and maybe a china and/or a splash along with a cowbell. Thanks in advance!

I don't know about the prices. Wuhans are decent but you can do better. Saludas are good, and some of the members on here have personal experience with them. I have only heard good things about Saluda. Price-wise, Im clueless. I know you can do Saluda trade ins with broken/other cymbals

I saw that too. I believe it's a type-o, or just a little confusion on his part on sizes.

Anyway naboutboul, No they don't really compare to Zildjain or Sabian really IMO. As far as Saluda, I don't know that Jamie necessarily wants his cymbals to sound like either. As far a quality, his are comparable I think. His cymbals aren't meant to, I dunno how to explain it exactly, be that "clean". That doesn't mean they're not good. He has great cymbals though for a very fair price. BTW, he also has a trade-in program that's a good deal if you have some old pies lying around. Email him, he will get back with you. Sometimes it takes a little bit so be patient.

The Wuhans are a lot different. They are trashy. They are great for the $ and have their place. I don't know anyone on here that play strictly Wuhan. I do know a lot on here that own them. Wuhan's though need to bit listened too first before buying. If you have a GC or Smash around you, go in and play all of them. There may be just one gem in the store, but you'll find it. I've personally never seen Saluda's in a store. I'm sure they're in some, just not in these parts. A word of caution, buying cymbals online is a little risky. You don't really know exactly what you're getting till it's in your living room and then you may not like what you got.

I have cymbals from Saluda, Wuhan, and Dream. Dream is another one to look into, they sound hella good. I play them all alond with my Zildjian.

Saluda's are a different sound that may not be for everyone. There are some vids of saludas on youtube that you can check out. I would say that in terms of guitars and whatnot, my saludas seem a bit distorted compared to the cleaner sounds of other cymbal companies. thats just how my ears hear them. Until he can get sound files for all his different lines, all you can do is search for the vids on you tube.

Yes, they are a bit warmer/trashier. I would liken it to running a cymbal through a very subtle tube overdrive. It's not a bad thing, and often it's a very good thing (how many guitarists like a Roland 120 sound compared to a warm tube amp?). But it's something to consider.

I find they record really well, and sound really nice. And they're very durable. But I'm not a fan of the cheap Voodoo chinas.

I still want to hear and play a set of S series.

try used cymbals, get some Zilds or Sabians from the local pawn, or craigs list.

Slap, as far as the S series, I had a pair of crashes, 16 and 18. they sounded okay, had a nice trashy/sizzley sound to them, but not very loud, didn't cut through that well. But for the $ they were great. I think I stumbled across them in a MF catalog and scored 'em for $99.
