Well my bud pulled the trigger

After a number of conversations and a bunch of info hanging hands between me, him, my local dealers and friends (including you all) my buddy Rich bought his first kit. I had him do some listening, so research, some configuring and some bartering, and this is what he came up with for his 1200.00. It did cost him a bit more because of instate taxes, but here's what he got:

Black Mapex Meridian (MAPLES)...in his words...

These Mapex I got are friggnin SWEET, man. I got the Maple set in black. 22" bass, 10" and 12" mounted toms and 16" floor tom and hardware... they sound great too! I got a nice Mapex throne with the bicycle type seat. comfy and gives the legs freedom And I got a used Sabian HH Raw bell dry pipe ride symbol that sounds amazing, Stagg 17" crash cymbal - used - sounds just like an old Zildgian - awesome! And finally - new Meinl 14" Hi Hats with the wavy bottom cymbol - sounds real nice

He is extremely happy and get this... he bought them from Keith Larson at Mid Atlantic drums and Keith is gonna bring them over to his house, set them up and tune them to his liking. NOW THAT'S CUSTOMER SERVICE!

Thanks for all your help guys. He wanted me to tell you all that this kit is really kickin' and he recommends them to anyone. And I recommend keith to anyone in our area as well. He's been selling me gear since the 70's...great person to deal with!!!:thu:

When I saw the title I thought "Oh no" and expected some very grim news. But it turned out that this is a very happy post! Is this his first time playing or is he just returning to drumming? Either way, tell him to join us on here and post some pics! :thu:

I know I know, like vaporware. He promised me pix as soon as the kit comes in. He played on a set there comparing the birch and maples, but he wanted a different finish. I can't believe he bought so quickly, I had another dealer lined up for him to show him 3 more brands at a different store. He said these called him...what can I say...when I brought my blue kit home, my wife looked at me and said wow, that's different......but they called me! As these did to him...:thu:

carm, so you have an "in" at B.D.?

If that's Baltimore Drums...err Mid Atlantic Drums...whatever the hell it's called...yeah...I'm friends with Keith Larson the owner. He knows Hoff as well. Keith and Frank Zack sold me the big blond kit you've seen in my pix and I think the black Ludwig Octaplus if I'm not mistaken...there used to be a whole crew at Gordon Millers I dealt with when Yeager's and Stringer's closed down...then Keith opened a small shop on Belair Rd and then opened up MD Drums...

I can't believe I still got connections....

that's dope, bro. i carried on like a schoolgirl on some other thread about keith and baltimore drums. i think it was loss that brought up a snare that keith threw out there under the B.D. moniker again, recently. it gave me quite the chubby.:thu:

I like the fact that you can talk to someone in sales who's intelligent and HAS/IS in the field, not just talking about how things sound. Field experience (hard core gigging) is an invaluable resource to the working drummer. I don't wanna know specs...I wanna know how much punch I'll have at 10ft, 30ft, a hundred feet from a stage. I wanna know if hardware holds up under real life road conditions...

AND by the way, just to let you in on some other info from my sales buds...I don't know what has come about, but the new Pearl hardware is a bit of a letdown according to them...not in looks but durability. I've been told that they have changed metal alloys and are going with a more "white metal" compound, and it is not like the hardware of say, some of the older Pearl equipment. My friend has been getting complaints of breakage and "cheaposity" and they are really looking hard at Pearl and being more discerning. The hardware in question is on the new Vision series stuff...it was a cost cutting measure on behalf of Pearl and it may cost them in the end...

for what it's worth...just some sideline info...
