Members mikestix78
Hello everyone,I currently play a set of 13" hi hats and am looking for a second set of hats. I really like the sound of the 13" hats and the way they play, but when i'm playing jazz styles, where the hi hat foot plays a bigger role, I find that the 'chick' sound isn't pronounced enough. The hats I have are 900/1000 grams. Do you guys think just getting a heavier set of hats in 13" would do the trick or should i just make the move up to 14's? Also, if you have any experience playing both 13/14 hats, could you share the not-so-obvious differences that you have found between these sizes? thanks so much! Members faileddrummer
The difference with that "chick" sound between 13" and 14" is the amount of air needing to get pushed out of the hats before they close. Prolly wrong here though.
Members mikestix78
so.. would a heavier set of 13's do it? or would going to 14 just be better overall? any other opinions? thanks guys i'm looking at a set of 13's that are in the 1100/1200 range and 14's in the 1200/1400 gram range if that helps
Members cearleywine
Aquire a quickbeat or mastersound bottom. If you're getting any kind of airlock now you may solve it by drilling a hole in the bottom. Or simply try flipping the hats over. Currently using a k dark crash over quickbeat. Very jazzy, crashable, and light, but that quickbeat allows a great pronouced chick when need it to cut through the mix.
Members 1001gear
I think the best you can do with any standard pair of hats is balance around the chick it will make. The chick doesn't have to be a backbeat. Half the time you just bounce figures off it. No missing it's presence in those spots. if you need loud 13s regardless, KZs or quick beats. Members Zon5string
Zildjian Quick Beats or Sabian Fusion Hats. I have both, and they both get a great "chick" sound.

Members marko46
These types of questions are so hard for me to answer. I own my 14" New Beats, and 14" Saluda Nemesis. I have a sets of 13" Saluda Mists, meinl lazers (old/entry level), Saluda Proto Types, and the 12" Avedis I'm selling. For me, the smaller hats just don't have the chick I prefer. They're a nice accent hat for aux hats, but really need to be miced so that they can be heard. My New beats, which are '70's era's, and the Nemesis hats have massive amounts of chick and ass, especially the Nemesis. Very loud and ballsy. There are a lot of good suggestions here. An easy quick fix is drilling the hole in the bottom hat, not big, just a little one at first. If that's not enough, drill one more hole 1/3 the way around, and repeat once more if still necessary. Probably not much help, but my 2 cents anyway. marko
