What heads did you buy?

As a general rule, you should use single-ply heads on the bottom of toms. The Hydraulic is a two-ply head filled with oil. The general consensus is it kills the sound of most drums, especially on the bottom (resonant) side of toms.

So what heads do you have for the 12" now?

The Studio X's are good heads, it's just for resonant heads you want them to resonate (get it?)...so use single ply heads without muffling.

If you really, really hate the Studio X's you can remove the muffling (it's just a sticker) and use it on the reso side and put your G2's on the batter.

alright cuz with my 12" tom the studio x's have the built in muters but it still rings out too much and if i put on a muter it kills the sound way too quick. but yeah ill need to get some bottom heads.

Most guys use 10mil single-ply clear heads for resos: Remo Ambassador, Evans G1, Aquarian Classic Clear.

Also: the better you tune, the more of that ring goes away and what's left is good-sounding, not obnoxious. So if you're an inexperienced tuner, it might be best to stick with a classic combination, such as clear Emperors over clear Ambassadors or clear G2s over clear G1s, and get your tuning chops honed.

When you do get your tuning up to snuff they'll sound great, where a heavily muffled head (such as the hydraulics) will sound soft and lifeless.

Finally: real drums have some ring. It's a good thing, makes the drums sound lively.

The evans hydrolics make a big difference to the sound of the
DRUM
?

Fixed.

Another for Gatzen. Drum tuning seems to be a 'secret art' among many drummers. I remember my first set of heads, I had duct-tape, kleenex and those HORRIBLE Remo Muffle Rings (not the thin plastic that sits on top, but a plastic tray that holds a foam roam)....yeah, it still sounded ringy and horrible because I didn't know what I was doing.

Takes some practice, but you'll be amazed at how many people will tell you they love the sound of your drums and you should always offer your 'expertise' to those who have yet to learn the art (in a friendly way of course).

You need to tune them up right and let em sing!
